New stock

Building a new stock for my 6BR remington varmint rifle. I typically hunt at night and shoot out of a vehicle using a spotlight to find predators like red fox. Have used a mcmillan bakers special for a while but didnt like the feel so Ive shaped a left handed thumbhole stock from sheoak- which is a native Australian timber. Its getting inletted and bedded next week, then I have the job of trying to finish it and do this fantastic grain pattern some justice.

Wow, nice! You will have to keep us posted on the progress. So is "Sheoak" a hard or soft wood? it has very nice character. Different then what you normally see, and I like that.

I would classify it as a hardwood, but its not as hard as some of our other native timber.

The grain on this piece of wood is exceptional- its not a typical piece of Sheoak.

Nice job! Always good to see the creative juices turning a piece of wood or metal in to something of beauty. Can't wait to see the finished product. Thanks for posting.

Yes it will be an oil finish. The grain is very tight and oil probably will finish up not far off a clear lacquer!

Heres an update from inletting- tomorrow the pillars and devcon will go in before final finishing friday then oil over the weekend. Fridays hunt has been postponed sadly, but thats ok I have plenty of opportunity over the next few weeks to get out and chalk up some kills with the rifle.

It's been a long time since I oil finished a stock. Do they even still make Lin-Speed Oil. Not Linseed.

Bedded it this evening, might have been a little light on with the devcon under the tenon area but the recoil lug recess was overflowing so confident with that. Tang is sweet and pillars will be solid as a rock. Tomorrow will show how it ended up. The recoil pad is on and its just about ready for final sanding and finishing.

Almost done- just a final wax and one more bit of hardware to go on. But I had to put it all together for a look.

I ended up going with a friends recommendation for that wood and going with tru oil instead of the tung oil. While it might not be the purists way of finishing it, the stock came up with an awesome gloss that really shows the character of the wood. There are only iphone pictures.
