New Silhouette 7-08 build_barrel configuration

Building a new Standard class HP Silhouette rifle in 7-08. I have seen a number of Standard class guns with the end of the barrels configured in a "cone" shape. Does this actually reduce recoil....?

Are you talking about the crown? If so...then no it doesn't. Unless it has a brake.

The end of the barrel is a "cone" cut back from the crown at about a 45% angle. The entire barrel.... Used to be popular on reverse taper HP MS guns...

I don't know if it would reduce felt recoil or not. Having more weight at the end of the barrel would increase the moment acting on the shooter so I'd guess less muzzle rise and conceivably a more steady hold for offhand shooting. If people stopped doing it, it probably wasn't worth the effort.

Out of curiosity, what bullets are you going to be using?

Still uncertain as to the specific bullets... At least two kinds and weights.

Heavy bullets for the farthest targets - Rams at 500 meters

Lighter bullets for Chickens (200) Pigs (300) and Turkeys - (385) - Meters
Probably Varget or R17 - or, maybe what my riflesmith shot..? "in days of yesteryore..."

Your everywhere! LOL, What smith in CC are you using? Email me and I will put you in touch with a friend there if you have not already meet him, Neal Ward. He was President of CCPRC for a long time and helped get rifle silhouette started there. He used Hart barrels and had a reverse taper on file with them. Are they even shooting silhouette in Corpus Christi any longer or do you have to go to New Braunfels to shoot? I shot my first HP silhouette match at CTSA in October of 1978, dang I am getting old. I shot a 7mm-08 for a while back when if was not even a factory cartrige yet and I used 120-140 gr bullets for CPT and 168-175 for rams. If I were using one today I think I would try the 130 & 175 Sierra match kings.

Speak to Neal fairly frequently.... This morning as a matter of fact..... No place to shoot here now. Houston, New Braunfels or Austin....

You speak of old... I am going to look at a 7mm IHMSA tomorrow... Might just buy it and go WAY retro....

Remember the King Tube - that's me. Eric King used one THIS year to win the Nationals.
I saw the first 7-308 that Joe Decker shot in New Mexico.
I used 120 Nosler for the first three and 175 Sierra for the rams.
I did that with the 7-308 and then the 747 (222 mag necked up to 7mm).
Neal was shooting a 30-223. That was what gave me the idea of the 747.
Yes the reverse taper barrels slow the movement down. First one I asw was here in Arlington Texas shot my Col. Charles Askins and smithed by Mike Walker from Remington.
And you talk OLD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well... The others might will laugh but I will quite likely have a reverse taper barrel on a gun very shortly. Still not 100% as to the caliber ....

I have had silhouette rifles in 7-08 7br and .260 rem. I liked the .260 best because of the less recoil. I sold the 7-08 and 7br and I still have the .260. The 7br recoil was about on par with the .260 but the performence of the .260 was better.

I shot silhouette in my early "daze", I used a 7-08 with 120's chickens through turkeys, and 175 SMK for rams. I rang 2 rams with the 175's at a State Championship and watched Mark Pharr (we used to shoot together) knock over ram after ram with his 6.5x47 shooting 139 grain Scenars. I had a 6.5x47 built but by then I had started shooting F-Class and never shot it in silhouette and it became my hunting rifle.

I think you would be happier with a "47" or 260 over the 7mm-08. Less recoil and enough punch for rams.

Probably those magic Lapua bullets. They probably generate additional kinetic energy which allows them to out punch those 175s.... ;D

Hi Merlin it stands to reason that same weight bullets and velocity that recoil will be simular. But one thing for sure is that those 139 gr. scenars will have less punch on the shoulder than the 175 gr. in a 7-08 that your talking about.

Man... I know and accept that as truth..... My only real thought on the 7-08 being "superior" is that you can shoot a 140 as well as a 175 in an 7-08 but a 140 is (generally) about the limit with a "lesser" caliber....

I actually watched Mak Pharr with his 6.5X47 last weekend and he knocked the Rams on their butts and.... we were shooting into a ~25 mph head wind....Based upon what my eyes told me the 6.5X47 has the guts to do the job...

I am willing to accept that a 140 is good enough (mostly) for the job but I have a hard time with the 140 having as much (or somehow better?) transferable down range energy as the 175....
