New Sierra 6.5 mm 150 gr MatchKing

Does anyone have a length on the thing? I would like to put it in the Twist Calculator. At my elevation and cartridge, it will stabilize in a 1:8 if the bullet is only .100" longer than a 140 Hybrid.

This evening I emailed them asking for the length. I'll post it once they respond.

I've got a customer that is running the 147 Honady ELD in a 6.5 Creedmoor with really good results in the PRS venue.
If it works well in that particular system, the 150 SMK would be a step up in the 6.5x284 class of cartridges.

I've never had an issue finding excellent accuracy with any Sierra bullets I've ever tried from MatchKing to GameKing to BlitzKing and Varminter flat base HPs. So I wouldn't be worried about accuracy AT ALL. As long as you have the recommended twist and a case big enough to push em, I'm sure the accuracy will be easy to find

No, speed doesn't equal accuracy, but there is a point where a bullet is too heavy for a certain case capacity to benefit from the gains in BC over a lighter faster bullet. So if velocity can be kept up closer to the same realm of next lighter class of bullets one should gain the BC rewards at distance. Although it might be small gains, it is still a gain.

Eta: but yes, accuracy > velocity

Very well said ;)

When I stopped in for a tour early summer, I mentioned the idea of a heavier/higher BC bullet for the 6.5.
There wasn't any hint of a grin or a "well, just wait" . . . Didn't they have a 155gr 6.5 a few years back?
I'm glad to see it having a 6.5 WSM in the corner that will make F class wgt.
I need to check the twist though and my inventory list of X Cal bbls. Hope I went fast enough on the spin cycle...

Hello All,

After seeing the article on the new 150 I called Sierra's Tech Line to get the length of the bullet. They told me it was 1.500 OAL and with that plugged in on the J.B.Calculations Stability site a 150 going 2850 FPS at 70* should be stable in an 8.0 Twist. I hope this is true and they also said these bullets are already shipping.

Yes, they had a 155 mk. Stabilized in a 1:8

I just ordered a proof research 1-7.5 twist just for this bullet. Thinking about doing a 6.5-06 AI or something along those lines. But for sure a 6.5-284 at the minimum

Got a response from Sierra regarding length of the P/N 1755, 150 grain MK:

"Use the nominal length of 1.5” for your calculations."

I'd sure like to try these in one of my 6.5x55AI rifles, but I used 1-8.5tw bbls in both - and neither one of them is anywhere close to being shot-out yet. Guess I'll just have to start using them more often...lol

I'm beginning to see a few retail barrel suppliers stock 1-7 & 1-7.5 twist 6.5mm barrels. If I did not have 3 8 twist blanks in my closet I would go for a 1-7.5" twist on my next 6.5x47 rebarrel.

what speeds are you seeing with your 6.5 x 55 AI?

I was a bit surprised when I chronographed the 1st 6.5x55AI bbl I'd done, which was a 30" Bartlein hvy Palma for a BAT 3LL prone rifle - was getting only 40fps or so more vel than the 2910fps I was getting out of a 30" 6.5x55 chambered Krieger med Palma bbl on my Nesika Palma rifle. Since then, I've done another couple of 6.5x55AIs on M700 LA & Bighorn TL2-LA actions, and believe I'll be running them at no more than 2940fps, as that's where the best accuracy seems to be, and trying to go faster is just harder on brass. Not a big deal - at least the AI brass doesn't need trimmed after every firing, as was the case with the stock 6.5x55.

Powder Valley has them in stock . . . $39.48 per 100.

Sierra has come to play...offering the 110 in the 6mm and now the 150 in the 6.5. Good looking bullet...gives me the itch to build something :D
