New Sierra 6.5 mm 150 gr MatchKing

Worth a try in the bigger 6.5s if the BC is close to claimed. Pointed, too.

I get silly speed with the 140s and RL-26 in my 6.5x284 - I'm going to do a work-up with this bullet at first chance.

"This bullet requires a twist of 1-7.5 to stabilize." I think this eliminates me from the from the 150s till its barrel time.

I thought about trying them in one of my 6.5x284s with a slower powder than H4350 but I run 8.5 twists. My experience running the old 175SMK s in 7mm with a slower twist than advertised wasn't good, so I'm out for now.

This looks like it would fit a 6.5SAUM well. 3200+ should be easy with a 30" .

Does anyone have a length on the thing? I would like to put it in the Twist Calculator. At my elevation and cartridge, it will stabilize in a 1:8 if the bullet is only .100" longer than a 140 Hybrid.

Interesting that the load data link sierra published lists more powder capacity with the 150 vs the 140/142 for many of the powders.

I wonder whether people will start jumping ship to a 260AI?
Anybody that knows me, knows I am a HUGE fan of the .260AI. However, in this case I think the 6.5 x 284 would be absolutely perfect for this bullet. Now this cartridge can really come into it's own.. The 6.5 x 284, in my opinion, is at it's best with slow powders. This bullet would really make the "slows" like H1000, RL-26 and even Retumbo cause it to REALLY turn on!!!

I am curious about this bullet in the 260AI, if the velocity can be kept up around 2900 it might be worth a shot. Might try it out.

SO what about accuracy and the distance... I'd like to hear some accuracy testing results rifle in terms of accuracy. Speed doesn't necessarily equate to accuracy.

No, speed doesn't equal accuracy, but there is a point where a bullet is too heavy for a certain case capacity to benefit from the gains in BC over a lighter faster bullet. So if velocity can be kept up closer to the same realm of next lighter class of bullets one should gain the BC rewards at distance. Although it might be small gains, it is still a gain.

Eta: but yes, accuracy > velocity

...which can be somewhat subjective. Depending on the usage case, better wind drift may be more important than flatter trajectory, or vice versa. I've seen a fair number of people running Berger 130 VLDs in their 6.5x47 or 6.5 CM, because the flatter trajectory was more valuable to their mindset - in terms of more room for error on unknown distance targets i.e. PRS, vs. the better wind drift of the 140 class bullets. But in F-class (particularly F/TR, even if it diverges somewhat from the 6.5mm theme) with known distance targets, the heavier bullets (200gn) with less wind drift tend to trump the much flatter shooting 155gn pills.

It'll be interesting to see how all the new offerings from the various makers stack up... exciting times, for sure!
