Good class and good people putting it on.

I highly recommend taking this class if you have any interest in shooting Mid or Long Range High Power Rifles.

Back in 2018 my then 15 year old son (Dylan) & I took this class at Bayou Rifles. The folks putting this on are really great and some of the best shooters in the sport (making this is a sweet deal at $25/person).

But be careful, taking this class may result in thousands of dollars spent on ammo, optics and barrels over the next few years,,....,,,and also lots of fun.

Thank You Again for once again putting on this class for new shooters & see you at the Range!

Taking a class is good, it is not the end all be all. You must be willing to go practice in the wind and always use wind flags. Over the years I have found great reluctance to doing this. Then when you start to figure it out you need to not be afraid to actually do it in a MATCH. About 12 yrs ago I was leaving a 500 yd match with over 100 shooters that I ended up second in by shooting the high score the second day in bad bad wind. A fellow came up beside me as I walked to the car and asked where I held on the last relay. I said about half way into the target beside me. As he turned away he said sort of under his breath, "I would never do that". Yep, and he never wins and I had been shooting with him for many years. Don't spend all you practice time at dawn or dusk with no conditions.

This will be the third edition of this class. Bayou Rifles puts it on every 4 years, it seems. It's an unbelievable amount of work, especially the first time we did it in 2014. I kept all the documents from that time and when we reprised the class in 2018, the workload was somewhat less, and we had a great bunch of volunteers to help prepare and deliver the class.

From that class, we produced a training document that is available as a PDF at the Bayou Rifles website. Anyone is welcome to download it and use it, even in your own classes if you set one up. The only condition is that credit for the document be given to Bayou Rifles; we had several people write articles for that document and keeping the names and giving credit to BRI is the best way to thank them.

We are updating the document to add information about the use of ShotMarker scoring system used at Bayou Rifles and we are scouring the various articles to freshen them as needed.

Please note that you do not have to be a member of Bayou Rifles to attend the class; it is open to the public.

WIND CLASS DIY: 3ft piece of caution tape at the target and at the shooter. Correct more at the target. 45 degrees is 4-5mph. Straight out is 7-8mph, straight out trailing is 10-12 mph. After that you need real wind training. LOL

We had 23 people show up for the class. We could not have asked for better weather. The afternoon session at the 1000-yard range was a lot of fun. We had quite a bit of our southern twitchy wind and we experienced lots of interesting results on the targets. It was a perfect day for a wind clinic.

And a bit of a taste for the conditions that we experienced the following day for the Bayou Rifles LR Club Championship. Wow. It was quite the experience.

A big thank you to all the volunteers who gave of their time, expertise, and ammunition during the clinic. Beyond the folks listed earlier, we also had KJ Pyne, Mike Merkler, Ray Potter, Felton Corbett, Richard Goody, Tracy Self, Peter Ackerson and Richard Aurich. If I forgot someone, it's because I'm old(ish) and forgetful.

I am so proud of the club for having such dedicated volunteers helping bring new competitors into the sport.

And did I mention that it was quite sporty on Saturday and unreal on Sunday?
