Keith Gross from Hartsville, TN., and Steve Perry from Scottsville, Ky came over yesterday. Keith had sent me a message and asked if I could teach him something about long range shooting. I think he may have taught me something. Main thing that there are some good students out there that pick it up quick as Keith made hits with his rifle at all distances attempted out to and including the 800 yard Chuckie. He told me up front he had the equipment, but had never shot past 250 yards and wanted to learn about the mil lines and elevation come ups. Well he picked a good day to learn about windage and using mil lines. Winds were gusting 15 to 20 miles per hour. When he worked out to 800 yards, the wind pushed the bullet about 3 feet left. Impact happened to be on a mil-line and I told him to put hat mil-line on Ole Chuckie. That next shot missed by a couple of inches and I told him to old the mill line off chuckie a couple inches opposite side and it nailed him next shot. The custom Rem 700 7mm STW did it's thing with the 140 grainers.
Next he pulled out his Rem 700 Custom 50 cal muzzle loader and put two bullets through the exact same hole at 100 yards.
Now to spoil him with a bench gun. I set up my Borden TPE 6 Dasher. I put up a clean target at 100 yards with 4 thumb tacks.
I put a couple orange bullseyes on it but decided to do something different. I told Keith and Steve to spot me. Told them to watch
one of the thumb tacks. First shot, no warm up, no sighters the thumb tack was removed. Now watch the second thumb tack. It did take a second shot on the second thumb tack. Now I put Keith under the wheel of the Borden TPE with Barts 105 Hammers. First thing was a Jewell trigger lesson for Keith. Now, first shot and Keith's tack was gone. He removed two tacks with 3 shots.
Next Keith shot on an orange bull and put two holes touching with the Borden Dasher.
I think he was hooked. He arrived at the DOME at noon and we quit shooting because of darkness.
Steve Perry found a load for his 6 BR with 105's with Varget. He put 4 of 5 shots touching. He also shot a great group on steel at 800 with his Savage 6.5 Creedmore.
I put a 6.5 x 284 barrel on my Viper SS and zeroed the scope with two holes touching a 100. Then I dialed up to the 700 yard hostage taker. Human sillouette with a 5 inch flapper by the neck of the hostage. Hit the flapper and it flips to the other side of the hostage's neck. I hit the flapper first two shots, but third shot was off a couple inches and got the hostage in the neck.
Also Shayne Halliburton had a new barrel on his Stainless, scrolled 700. It was a 22 BR and I got it on paper
