New shooter, help me choose a caliber for my needs.

.308 is a good compromise on ballistics, recoil and barrel life. If you cannot handle the recoil of a .308, then you had better go with the light calibers. It will serve you well.

The .223 is very capable out to 600 yards every day. No recoil, easy to load for, and long barrel life makes it a great choice. If the gong were farther, then the .308 would be the choice. Enjoy leaning to shoot with a light recoiling rifle, learn to reload well, and the world will be yours....

Tikka T3 Sporter in 308Win, 260 Rem or 223 rem.
You can't go wrong. Sporter is same rifle as Sako TRG, but only $2,000 cheaper.
Not remotely correct. While the stocks look he same, they are very different. The Tikka uses a Tikka dual lug bolt, where the sako used a tri-lug bolt, made by Sako. The barrels are different profiles and the Tikka uses a 24" and the sako a 27". The TRG has a multi adjustable stock, takes a $160 10 round steel welded magazine, and runs $2300 USD, while the Tikka has an adjustable cheek piece, uses a 5 round plastic magazine, and costs $1440 USD.
