New Shilen Action and Barrel nut system

Curious what some of you might think, Shilen says this system is just as accurate as shouldering a barrel? the shilen action is a Remington 700 platform intigrated into a Savage floating bolt head, the only thing is with the nut system you can only have a barrel that is 1.060 vs many a popular 1.250 that would have to be shouldered, I know Savage has done this for many years, but it is hard to compare a Savage barrel to a Shilen, buying the shilen action sure will save money on gunsmith work if it will do as well with other type equipment , such as Bat or Stolle. I am considering buying the single shot action but I am also considering Bat and Stolle, my main purpose is competition weather it be 100 yards or 1000 yards, barrel nut is easy to change barrels, and shoulder barrels are even easier, but the gunsmith cost is a factor, what is your opinion?

$1500 for a barreled action (+$450 for trigger and safety! $3200 for a complete gun!) is a lot of scratch. I can't imagine that the Shilen action has that much over the Savage target action which you can to get into, with a trigger, for a little more than half that. You can put a Shilen barrel on either one. Savage has 60 years of experience in this system, and generations of aftermarket parts. Either way it will add up to an accurate project. If you enjoy the build process, go with the Savage. If you want to just buy it and shoot it the Shilen seems like a nice package.

Jeff G,
The Shilen action takes Remington triggers, and stocks, IMO these are significant advantages . Also, they should not require blueprinting. Given the difference in price, I don't think that Shilen is trying to compete directly with Savage, but since they do a brisk trade in drop in barrels for Savages, offering them in their highest grade of barrel, and with custom chambering with a customer's reamer (if that is what they prefer) I think that it is a good thing that they have come out with this action to compliment their barrels. IMO it gives customers a way to assemble the ultimate do it yourself rifle, one that should perform on a par with anything that a gunsmith would build, as long as the bedding is done right. I have a high opinion of the accuracy potential of Savage rifles, having owned several that performed admirably, but until someone comes up with a trigger for them that has the versatility of the ones that Jewel make for Remingtons, they will always be at a slight disadvantage for some applications.

Boyd got your PM Thanks, Yes both your replies really helped, I have 4 or 5 Savages one that has been trued and shouldered with a krieger 30BR done by Bruno, and I have only one Remington that is having a shilen 6.5x47L shouldered soon, I really like the idea of the shilen package.

I have had one of these for about a year now and like it very well. What it is is a Stiller predator with a floating bolt head and savage small shank threads with Shilens name on it whats not to like. I ordered a barreled action with trigger in 25-06 with a 28" barrel. I bedded it in a Bell&Carlson M40 stock. Its a great groundhog/critter gun, extremly accurate no, but it shoots very well.

I own 4 Savages and love every one.... but I do wish the bolt would cycle easier. I LOVE my Target Accutrigger and do not loath the Jewel.... (and SSS makes a damn nice alternative if you hate the TAT)

well while most were drinking and shooting fireworks yesterday I replaced the trigger on my 30BR Savage Target action that trigger is a good one but not good enuff , well not light enuff I installed a rifle basics and got it set to 4 oz, it took awhile to do that so that the trigger wouldnt go off when closing the bolt, the accutrigger was 13 oz but not consistant sometimes it was a pound or better, looking forward to shooting this gun maybe today but it is going to be 100 degrees.

About October when the shooting season is over here in Missouri I will make my decision of what action to buy, Bat, Stolle or Shilen
