New Ruger American

Any one put their hands on one of these rifles yet-- looks like a rifle to compete with the savage Axis and Remington 770-

I looks nothing like any Ruger I have ever seen-- they have left the building on this one--we will see if it is a Bag or a Flop

I have handled one. My first impression was it being a rifle of extreme economy of manufacture. Very light, flexible plastic stock. Cheap magazine. Huge bolt, fair trigger, and very "utilitarian" finish overall. It makes my M77 MKII look like a fine custom rifle. I do agree it is targeted towards the Axis and others in that market, which are rifles I'm not interested in. If you take into consideration it's intended market, it may do ok. I think a new shooter may be better off with something else, slightly used, at the same price.

Time will tell.

Held, it, shot it, talked about it.

-- Stock is OK for deer hunting, that's about it. LOP a little short, stock is flexy tupperware.

-- Uses a barrel nut system like Savage.

-- Rotary mag is nice -- but where's the 10-rounder?!

-- Trigger is pretty heavy and uses a little insert safety lever like an Accutrigger.

-- Action itself is stout and looks like a Tikka, with slab sides and side bolt release.

-- Bolt action is smooth, but bolt handle is too short.

-- No idea if the barrels will shoot. In my experience with Ruger pistol barrels, the company has tooling issues, which could lead to sloppy, ragged chambers. Figure that the barrel is a tomato stake.

-- Street Price is settling at about $350.00 - $380.00: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=272952799

Bottom line: Figuring you toss the barrel and the stock, you're paying about $380.00 for the action and trigger. Throw away the stock, and you have a nice action -- but I'd rather have a Tikka 595. Open question whether the fire-control system is good enough for accuracy. Once aftermarket stocks become available I think this would make a basis for a nice varminter. Cross your fingers that Timney or Jard can come up with a trigger.

One concern I have with Rugers is that, based on my experience owning 5 ruger pistols, Ruger has extremely poor dimensional control on some major components. If this action is CNC maybe that won't be a concern. But I don't know if you could move barrels from one RAR action to another.
