New Rifle Build, What Caliber...?

I'll assume you are saying the 22BR would be a good choice? Given your screen name, that would be my guess.
How is forming and loading for the caliber? What barrel/twist/bullet are you shooting?

Forming is easy by just running a 6BR case through a 22BR die or using a Redding body die and a Lee collet die to size the necks. I do turn the necks but that's not absolutely necessary depending on the reamer used.
I am shooting 1/8 twist barrels in the 2 that I have but would go 1 in 71/2 or faster on the next barrel to be able to shoot up to the 90 grainers but still be able to shoot the lighter stuff as well. I like the Berger 80's. It's very easy to keep groups under 1/2 moa with this cartridge and the recoil is very mild.
The 6BR is an awesome cartridge though and it's variants all do well. For punching paper at 300 I suggest the 6BR or 22BR would be a better choice over a 243 for inherent accuracy. I am just stuck on 22BR because it has done so well for me over the years.
Best Wishes on which ever way you go.

Just a heads up, I got the brass in trade BECAUSE I was contemplating a 22BR. I am not building a xxBR because I have the brass, I have the brass BECAUSE I want to build a xxBR.

In other words, the use of the word “caliber” in your thread title is the proper use of the word! That is, once you decide what caliber you want to neck your 6BR brass to you will have settled on the “cartridge” you will chamber for.

Thanks. Much appreciated.

I have a Cooper 22br, 1-12” twist. Liked it so much I had a 6.5x47 spooled up for it as well. Where one leaves off the other picks up.

So, here's where I'm at:
I have just had a .223Rem built. R700/Rock Creek 1:7/McMillan. I have the components for another neat little rifle as well. I have a R700 action but with a .473 bolt face (308) and a Rem 40X stock in great shape with BDL bottom metal that I will most likely run as a single shot with a single shot adapter. I was/am seriously contemplating a .243 and have a nice 1:7 M24 barrel. However I also have 100 pieces of once fired 6BR brass that I was thinking of turning into a 22BR but am now re-thinking.
Do I do the .243 and run 110's as planned or should I turn it into a 6BR and pass on the 22BR for the moment? Can the 6BR run the 110's fairly well to 300yards, which is where this rifle will spend the majority of it's life, punching holes in paper? I'm spinning roundy-round on it, and that wasn't helped by spending most of the day indoors doing very little as I had a "snow day" today.
HELP!!! :p:confused::p
i would say 6br is more inherently accurate than 243 and at that distance 6mm bullets have an advantage over 22 cal ones. theres a reason all those SR benchresters shoot 6ppc instead of 22ppc

At 300 yard you can’t go wrong with any of 6BR variants or the 22BR, even a 20BR would serve you will. You’ve already figured out how to deal with feeding issues.

I would just pick whatever appeals to you the most.

I have a couple 6BRs, a Dasher, a 22BR that use for varminting. I enjoy them all, in my experience none of them have an edge over the others at 300 yards. Pick your caliber, then your cartridge, the bullet you’d like to shoot, order the correct twist in your chosen barrel and enjoy. There is no wrong choice.

Even your 243 would be a good choice, it’s just not as cool as a BR variant. :D

Getting another barrel is not an issue. I have my .223 and am in zero rush. I'm building this myself so timing won't be difficult. Thank you for the suggestions.
You’re most welcome.

We shoot a winter varmint match here. You shoot prone with a bipod or rest. No sighters. Grip and rip.

The guy that owns all the records shoots a 1:10 straight 6 BR pushing Berger 90 grain target boat tails. He uses H4895.

I’ve had some success in that match and similar ones with that bullet, the Berger 87 Hunting VLD, and, most recently, the 90 grain Lapua Scenar BT. I’ve used Varget and IMR 8208 XBR.

In the “similar ones” there are some legs at up to 600 yards and they go out of their way to hide your bullet holes from you. I initially went with a 284 Shehane. It turned out to be too much trouble for me in that game. With all of that 7mm gear around and wanting bigger bullet holes, I ended up necking up the 6.5x47L to 7mm. It works like a charm for me. The disadvantage is that you are kind of our own your own developing loads. But, I really enjoy that part more than competition anyway. Sooooo....

BTW, I have 2 28” 1:8 straight 1.250 barrels, two 6 BRDX reamers (one with 104 FB, the other with 120 FB, IIRC), and a large stash of 105s just waiting for the day that I can spend more time shooting midrange games. Retirement can’t come soon enough.

Retirement??? Is this a new language? I don’t know if this word.
I started working on it, quite literally, when I was a sophomore in college. Circa 1982-83.

My grandfather gave me a commission...a dream. I added knowledge. I made mistakes and learned from them. I gained wisdom.

Time, gentlemen. It’s all about time. Get started early and let compound interest work for you.
