New Rifle Build, What Caliber...?

Bully

So, here's where I'm at:
I have just had a .223Rem built. R700/Rock Creek 1:7/McMillan. I have the components for another neat little rifle as well. I have a R700 action but with a .473 bolt face (308) and a Rem 40X stock in great shape with BDL bottom metal that I will most likely run as a single shot with a single shot adapter. I was/am seriously contemplating a .243 and have a nice 1:7 M24 barrel. However I also have 100 pieces of once fired 6BR brass that I was thinking of turning into a 22BR but am now re-thinking.
Do I do the .243 and run 110's as planned or should I turn it into a 6BR and pass on the 22BR for the moment? Can the 6BR run the 110's fairly well to 300yards, which is where this rifle will spend the majority of it's life, punching holes in paper? I'm spinning roundy-round on it, and that wasn't helped by spending most of the day indoors doing very little as I had a "snow day" today.
HELP!!! :p:confused::p

Not sure why you wouldn’t do just a 6BR, or 6BRA or 6 Dasher, especially since you are keeping it a single shot. You will not beat any of the 6BR wildcats out to 1000. Period.

I am shooting the 110's in a 6 br. Have a 7 twist proof research barrel at 21". Getting 2720 fps out of it with 29.7 grains of varget. My rifle absolutely loves this load, small groups and great velocity ES's. I have shot it out to 1150 with great consistency. My vote would be a 6 br, brass may not be readily available now but it'll come back. You could start with what you got. For 300 yards, the 107 smk's or the 105 hybrids would work just as well or for that matter some of the 95's, as at that distance I don't think you are going to see a huge benefit to the 110's.

The 6BR will shoot the 110's 50 300 yards and beyond quite nicely. You would need a 7 something twist.

You have all the ingredients from which to create the perfect 300 yard rifle.

I echo byrddogs suggestion that the SMK 107's, 105's or 95's are great if you are 'only' shooting to 300 yards. With any of those bullets you would be able to use an 8 twist, the 95's a little less.

I am prejudiced in that I prefer the slowest twist that will work for me so I pick the bullet first and then choose the twist.

just the opposite...
buy brass, buy dies, buy bits and pieces..
then build rifle
a 6br will do 300 all day long with out going to 100 plus bullets.
if you insist on 110's i would look at 6bra
bigger than a br, easier to build than a dasher.
I would not make a decision on using one rifle's brass in a new rifle, especially changing calibers. A total non starter in my book and a recipe for hair loss. BTDT.

Pleae re-read my post. The OP stated: "However I also have 100 pieces of once fired 6BR brass that I was thinking of turning into a 22BR but am now re-thinking".
Building a rifle so one can use brass that was already fired in another rifle is NOT a good basis to pick a caliber, even if it's the same caliber but even more so in his suggested case. He's going to need two different reamers.

Just a heads up, I got the brass in trade BECAUSE I was contemplating a 22BR. I am not building a xxBR because I have the brass, I have the brass BECAUSE I want to build a xxBR.

What would I suggest for 300 yards??? Ahhhhh...let me think a minute....ahhh maybe, %$#&(^
Best Wishes whatever you decide.
I'll assume you are saying the 22BR would be a good choice? Given your screen name, that would be my guess.
How is forming and loading for the caliber? What barrel/twist/bullet are you shooting?

My point is with brass fired in another rifle. For a new rifle, buy new brass. That is standard practice.

I shoot a 22BR and use Redding S type dies. Use 6BR brass with the proper size neck bushings for your chamber. Pick the twist rate best suited for the heaviest bullet you want to use. Twist rate on mine is 12 and I shoot 50s to 60s.

Those long/heavy bullets are wasted at 300 yards, but you already have the barrel...

If I was building *from a clean sheet* specifically for 300, I’d build a 1:10 6BR or Improved and shoot midweight bullets.

If I wanted to compromise a bit and have a more flexible rifle, I’d change that up to a 1:8 with a freebore that would handle the 105 class and the midweights (with some jump)

Getting another barrel is not an issue. I have my .223 and am in zero rush. I'm building this myself so timing won't be difficult. Thank you for the suggestions.

Thanks much.

If 300yds is the goal. I would just do a 6br and then just buy other bullets. It is not like your 110gr bullets will go bad.

As to the fired brass they will fireform to your rifle.
