New RCBS RockChucker Press question…

Explain Zero Press , Nexus , L.E. Wilson, and Prazzi press just to name a few?! I didn’t come here to make a point just asked for opinions on the ram.
Explain to me why basically none of the best shooters in the world are using those… most of them are turning the ram down on rock chuckers to make them loose, or using a Forster. If you want a great rock chucker, find one that’s loaded a couple hundred thousand rounds

You came here because you were worried something was wrong with your new press. I tried to help bring a problem to light and got a smart response, so again… good luck.

Top F open shooters process on Dillions & seat on arbor presses. I’m not new to this nor am I ungrateful for your advice or opinions as we both have them.

It’s one piece….. .02 step roughly 2.0” long just like this one I saw a pic of.it has all the contact a fella could want throughout the body of the press so doesn’t effect presses effectiveness…
well the small side of the ram cant be contacting the hole in casting can it.

Didn't realize that was a thing. Isn't it easier just to use an o-ring if you want some slop?
Easier, yes. Much more consistent to just turn the ram down, in my opinion. That’s what I do.

It’s almost impossible to get consistent bump using an O-Ring. It’s super simple with a turned down ram.

Not sure I agree with that, but I hear you.

So a turned-down ram makes better ammo that a non-turned ram. Why?

I’ve had mine for two or three years. It has the same step. I haven’t had any problems with it.
The question is now, what's going on there? Without it in hand, it is a bit tough to tell. It looks like a two piece ram. It looks too perfect where the step starts to be gross wear. It also doesn't look like it was turned down, but again, sometimes something gets lost in images.

The ram isn’t fighting alignment. Sometimes the play in the shellholder just isn’t enough.

Do you get shoulder bump within half a thousandth on every cases and little to no runout? If not, try relieving the ram or going to a Forster.

It’s the same reason you leave wiggle in a bushing. Play allows enough forgiveness for alignment. I’m not the only person that does this. It was being done for 50 years before I did it.

Let’s say you drop a couple thousand on a perfectly aligned press? How are those dies? I have some of the most expensive and elite dies and bushings that money can buy, and they’re not perfect….. so it’s a worn in or turned down rock chucker for me. Every time.

If you are correct, well, then, you have a serious issue with your press, especially since you also use the words "super tight" in your first posting.

I mean it in a good way…. Everyone I’ve had before has been very sloppy.

Brother….. I’m a Machinist and this isn’t a 2 piece ram. Smh

i may not have read all the replies but i wonder if the step is to provide clearance for the old primer compund that gets built up at the ram/casting and has worn some presses in the past.

I have a 4 or 5 year old RC Supreme/4 at home. I never noticed step in the ram. I also never looked, but I think would have noticed it.
I will look at it when I get home.

My RC-IV Supreme was new from RCBS online during one of their sales 10/2022, no step. I don't see the issue here, give it a little oil and enjoy or call RCBS and ask them.

I will say that mine had a sqeak that I thought was the ram but it wasn't, it was a joint at the bottom of the ram. My point is if you haven't checked, I wouldn't assume the tightness is the ram, might be some other part of the assembly.

@JMAN80 I would love to know where that green slot plug came from or can be had (post #5). Nice design.
