New range question

Texas Solo

B.S. High Master
Central Alabama Gun Club has finally begun clearing land for a new range. We could go to 800yds.
I'm questioning doing an 800 yard.

Berms are planned at 200, 300 & 600. That will cover F Class midrange & XTC service rifle. But, I think most LONG range shooters would prefer 1000yd over 800yds.
I don't want the expense of adding an 800 distance if it won't be used.

So the question is:
Would you travel to an 800yd match verses a 1000yd match?

Yes but Alabama is too far from Colorado.

First I would probably say ANY new range being built is better than NO range being built so I'm grateful for the efforts to improve the shooting sports. If I lived closer I'd shoot it just because it's a chance to shoot.

However, I'm going to agree that for F Class specifically, 800yds is ofter perceived as too easy, boring, simple and doesn't really mean much because you're shooting a 1000yd target 200yds closer so your scoring rings are effectively larger for the relative distance.

If you look at SWN scores for last year as an example, 99 out of 149 competitors shot a clean target with 39 of them shooting at least 13 or more X's. Meaning 800yds is effective just an X race.

The PRS guys would be all over that extra yardage and they bring
in shooters.. A shorter range VBR could be considered. Ridgway Pa.
has about 30 benches and runs about 5 relays once a month. That
place is always near capacity. Quite a few of the top paper punchers
in our region shoot it.

How many 1000 yard ranges are within a reasonable driving distance? If your the only range around for a long ways then it might work but like F class John mentioned 800 is a pretty boring distance for F Class since we shoot it on the 1K target.

In my opinion 800yds currently makes no sense unless you also have 900 & 1000yds.

May want to consider a 300m firing line. Some sling shooters who want a more challenging target than the MR-1 at 600yds like to compete at the actual 300m International target.

I know of one range that has 300yd and 300m target positions HOWEVER they don’t have pits. With Etargets virtually eliminating the need for pits intermediate distances are limitless .

I really wish you guys were building a 1000 yard range. Several of us in Mississippi drive to Reese Bottom in Linden,AL once a month to shoot 1000 yards. Would probably do the same to your area if not the same day. 800? No.

Understood, and the very reason I asked the question. Thanks.

I've been to Linden twice. Good matches & people.

Near what area is this new range being constructed and when is it planned to open?
Central Alabama Gun Club.
It's in Shorter Alabama. About 12 miles from Montgomery.
Land is still being cleared & all the plans need to be discussed, debated, and made final before actual construction begins. That process should begin as soon as the timber is done being cut. So total time...maybe 1 year.

FYI Texas Solo- As you’re probably aware, Reese Bottom is a one owner private range. I believe the plan is to shut it down in 5 years. If you did decide to go to 1000, and Reese Bottom does shut down, you guys would have the closest 1000 yard range in the area to many of us.

We can't go to 1000yds without an additional $300K. Membership would not approve that unless we could PROVE that it would generate substantial income.
