Early this week I will pick up my FN Mauser (AKA J.C Higgins M50) that has a new barrel installed. 6mm Remington, 1-8 twist, 5 L&G, stainless, # 5. That rifle was probably built in the 1950's. Controlled feed, non rotating extractor, a commercial version of the 98 Mauser. Possibly, that rifle was made using former 3rd reich-nazi machine tools transferred to Belgium under some reparation deal. I have 3 of these and using the right ammo I can get good results (BR shooters would assess 4's or 5's). It feeds ammo real smooth and the firing pin hits primers real hard (battle rifle). I put a Timney trigger on the rifle. It will have Warne bases with Burris Signature rings and a older Leupold 4.5-14X40 M4 scope. I have shot many rodents and a few deer with this rifle when it was a 6.5-06. I thought it would be real nice if I had another one of these - this was Sunday AM. I was thinking about the various design features of the M98 and 1911 that morning
Four hours later I did acquire another FN Mauser (JC Higgins M50) but this time it was in mint condition, just like being bought at some Sears store. This made me happy. When I was very young we (family) lived on the Sear's estate being employed as gofers. I used some Craftsman tools to finish building houses and loading benches.
Looks like another 6mm Remington - 105's, COAL just under 3 inches and feeds real good.
