New (old) rifle

Early this week I will pick up my FN Mauser (AKA J.C Higgins M50) that has a new barrel installed. 6mm Remington, 1-8 twist, 5 L&G, stainless, # 5. That rifle was probably built in the 1950's. Controlled feed, non rotating extractor, a commercial version of the 98 Mauser. Possibly, that rifle was made using former 3rd reich-nazi machine tools transferred to Belgium under some reparation deal. I have 3 of these and using the right ammo I can get good results (BR shooters would assess 4's or 5's). It feeds ammo real smooth and the firing pin hits primers real hard (battle rifle). I put a Timney trigger on the rifle. It will have Warne bases with Burris Signature rings and a older Leupold 4.5-14X40 M4 scope. I have shot many rodents and a few deer with this rifle when it was a 6.5-06. I thought it would be real nice if I had another one of these - this was Sunday AM. I was thinking about the various design features of the M98 and 1911 that morning

Four hours later I did acquire another FN Mauser (JC Higgins M50) but this time it was in mint condition, just like being bought at some Sears store. This made me happy. When I was very young we (family) lived on the Sear's estate being employed as gofers. I used some Craftsman tools to finish building houses and loading benches.

Looks like another 6mm Remington - 105's, COAL just under 3 inches and feeds real good.

Like you I have 2 FN Mausers. Got them from my Great Uncles, they were custom gun makers in Colorado, retiring in the 1980's. Both rifle's are Belgium made in the early 1950's. Both rifles are 7-06 AI, one a hunting rifle and the other called a bull gun with a heavy contour barrel. The quality and design are of an another era, simply beautiful. Just received the bull gun in a trade with my cousin. Currently glass bedding and pillar bedding the action and free floating the barrel. Then changed the high gloss finish to a hand rubbed oil. Using there data, the best I could get from it was 7/8" at 100 yards, for 5 shots, using 154 Hornady's, prior to modification. Will try again with the same bullet, to see if my work helped or hurt. Plan to try a target bullet in the future. Bore scope says the barrel has some life left. I have been personally using the sporter for over 30 years, as my favorite hunting rifle. Both rifles have Buehler scope mounts and old Timney triggers.

The model 51s were the Huskvarna ( Swedish 98) the 50 are a great find . Barrels were usually hi standard and some had 12 grooves .
