got the bug to build a 6br and i need a little advise. this will be for 100-600 yd praire dogs and 100-200yd local matches. shot from bench or table only.
will be built on remy action
bartlein 1 in 8 straight 1.250 or amu barrel 24-28 inches? not sure yet
laminated stock of some sort. still looking
thinking about just shooting heavies 105-108g
i have a smith in mind with 2 different 6br reamers and i will copy get his reamer info for the pro's here.

suggestion appreciated

6MM BR LAPUA 0.2720 1*30" 0.045 HSS GO
6MM BR 0.2720 1*30" 0.104 HSS GO

these r the two the smith has listed on his sight. the first one says lapua so I guess that's the one. how do I know what its throated for?

Welcome oneshot and know you will do well. You may want to try the longer barrel first as you can always cut it back...just a thought.
Best Wishes

Welcome sir,one thing you might talk to your smith about is the new lapua brass is slightly thinner in the neck requiring a .2704 neck.Ptg will sell you the right one and the neck wont be as sloppy providing you are using the new blue box brass which this reamer was designed for.

If those are your only two choices the second one is throated for the 105-108 bullets (.104 fb)

There are people using the .272 no-turn necks with the new blue box brass with no issues. It will work the case neck more since there is going to be more clearace but should not be a issue. I would guess you will have 4-5 thou clearance on a loaded round and that is what some strive for on the the larger match rounds (magnums)

Good Luck,

thanks for the insight. i'll look into that. a new ptg reamer shouldn't be to expensive..

does anyone have a 1.250 straight 28" barrel on a factory Remington action? will it be to much a of a problem. I plan on bedding past the lug about 2" to help.

Are you thinking about shooting this rifle at NBRSA sanctioned matches or club matches or__________?
The 100 to 200 yard rules are not going to allow what I use as a 1000 yard varmint rifle to compete in anything but the unlimited class where the rail guns will eat you alive. The stock weight and shape will be your limitation along with total weight. You might want to do some more research and or thinking about what the rifle will be doing most of the time and how serious you are about either discipline................

I will not be in sanctioned matches with it. I would like to shoot in a local open class that is 15lb and over pretty much anything .30 cal and under. will definetly shoot sage rats and rock chucks and may stretch it out to 1000yds every now and then for fun. that's why im interested in shooting the 105+ bullets.

update.

bartlein 1.250 straight pipe ordered. talked with bill shehane about an mbr tracker that I will probly order this week also. tried getting ahold of dave kiff about purchasing a 6br piloted reamer for the newer blue box brass but he was out. damn it. I would like to be able to shoot 80-108g or somewhere in there. anyone with that kind of reamer experience, chime in please

my build list will be

Remington action
bartlein 1.250 pipe 1 in 8 twist (thinkin of finishing at 30" with 11deg target crown)
shehane mbr tracker with aluminum butt plate, inletted for rem action and barrel
jewel 2oz trigger

as far as optics go im in between a fixed 25-35 leupold or getting a nightforce 8x32 or 12x42. I like that nightforce is a better tracking scope since I may be shooting at multiple yardages. any thought?

on scopes...don't overlook sightron. i have many leupolds, 3 nightforce and now 4 sightrons. these scopes are extremely clear and track perfectly. at 600 yds the nfs are ever so slightly clearer. the cost is 1/2 or less. you can find them on the marketplace site here as many shooters sell them as they move to higher power ones.

If you are very serious about 1,000 yards, the BR model is iffy with respect to the total MOA you can spin.

If you are going to be shooting a lot of varmints, a variable would be a nice to have. It can sometimes be hard to find the critters in a high-power fixed.

You need to find a good BR gunsmith in your area. Let me know where you are and maybe I can help. Sounds like a fun project. Do you have a mentor to rely on?

i am in the Prineville area del. i already ordered the barrel yesterday and just today ordered a blue box reamer from dave with 104-110 freebore for the heavies. i was gonna send my stuff off to chad Dixon of longriflesinc. all of his work is done on CNC machines. actions/barrels and all. his prices are better than most and the last gun i sent him was completed, cerekote and all 6 days from him receiving it. oh and i could always use a mentor to lean on and bug. lol.

I have been doing a lot of reading and basically want another nightforce. I am looking at 1/8 moa click only and between the 8-32 and 12-42 nxs benchrest model's, the 8-32 has zero stop and the same price as 12-42 without. I highly doubt I will need the 42 power setting so im leaning toward's the C322 model. which is 8-32x56 .125 click with the NP-2DD reticle which looks like the one for me. does anyone have one of these to give me experience with one? likes/dislikes?
