New Member Barrel Maker

I just got in, was making ar-15 barrels for a pair of DMR rifle projects late this evening, I see a lot of questions about the actions, yes they are a drop in fit for the 700s. We do not make them in house, we have a manufacturing variance with Defiance Machine to make them for us. I have no problem selling them separate, anyone can let me know what they may need and I will get them a quote and lead time. Thanks guys

What tolerance do you try to hold for finished bore diameter and how do you QC for it?

Welcome to the board! Quite a picky bunch so all the details of your process you are willing to give would be a huge plus. Would love to see some cut rifled prefits in both savage and remington. Would love to have a prefit for my 700 practice rifle.

Greg I have a deep bore .0001 indicator and have no problem holding a .0001 bore and groove tolerance the full length of the barrel even before lapping. I have an air guage set up but dont use it. It cannot tell me if the groove is ratcheted only the indicator can do that. That is the real battle cut rifling, not getting the groove straight. Thanks for asking, Shawn

In my previous life I was a custom cabinetmaker building for women their dream kitchens I know about picky clients, as long as you build beyond expectations there are no issues. My Dad told me as I was leaving our family business to move to Colorado 21 years ago to "Always give a man your best" little did we know they would be the last words he ever spoke to me as he was taken home in a farm incident just a few months later. I have held to that quote all my life and in business. So my barrels are made to the highest standards to give the greatest service possible. I don't know if I will ever have pre-fits in stock but I can make you one,let me know what you need. Thanks for the welcome!!! take care Shawn

You seem to be a good honest fellow that understands the task at hand. I think you will fair well with your business. Looking forward to watching your career and reputation grow. Good luck to you sir.

Shawn, I see you list lighter contours on your website and you say you use all 416R stainless so I take it you don't have a problem doing light contour stainless steel barrels like Bartlein, Brux, and Kreiger. Most of the button rifling makers will make lightweight stainless barrels but Rock Creek is about the only lightweight cut rifling maker that'll do them and they're about a year behind. If you introduce yourself on 24hourcampfire and let it be known that you'll do lightweight cut rifled tubes in stainless I guarantee you'll pick up a bunch of orders right there, guys are begging for them. Good luck to you.

Ken, come on by all are welcome just give a holler if it is before the front is open.

Let me as a writer thank Shawn. When I saw his post, I contacted him about getting one of his barrels for testing and a write-up. Without hesitation, he agreed to send one of my choice. I chose a HV in .30 cal/18 twist. I started shooting some score matches last year with my 6 PPC and did okay, but I would love to have the advantage of shooting a .30. I will have COL Stevens chamber it for a .30 BR and will put it on my old BAT/Leonard.

By this generous offer, I believe that Shawn and the others at Hawk Hill are serious about their barrel making endeavors. Thanks, James Mock

Hello Shawn and welcome to the forum.
I intentionally waited to let the posts build to determine what I perceived of you. Both as a business man and a truthful person in general. A lot of us on here have seen our share of the "johnnie come lately" vendors so when someone new pops on the scene we ask questions. You gladly answer complex questions as well as the simple ones with equal ease. You also seem truly interested in what the shooter wants, not the quick sell and never to be heard from you again. I wish you all the luck in good steel as well as all the business you can stand without compromising the roots that you spoke of.
