New Lightweight Hunting Rifle

During the off season, I have put together a new rifle. Anything wrong with my other rifle? No. This is just what makes for a fun hobby. I have owned for years several R8 Blasers. Great guns and are very versatile swapping calibers and scopes to suit different hunting situations. This build is my attempt at an “American” Blaser type rifle.I bought the barreled action chambered in 6 BR from a fellow forum member. I then sent the action to Borden to have a .223 bolt made and fitted. While at Bordens shop, he had the action and bolts nitrided. Borden is a top notch company to deal with. I then chambered another barrel for .308 Winchester. Then came 300 Blackout ( already had brass, dies and 9” Thunderbeast). Just recently, I chambered another barrel for .223. I feel that these four calibers will see me to the finish line of life. I love the MDT stock. Very clean lines and not sharp edges anywhere. Perfect for hunting. The scope is not the lightest offering out there BUT my gosh, if you have every hunted at dawn or dusk and craved a better sight picture, this scope is the ticket. Red center dot is awesome. This gun is not exactly pretty. No figured walnut. No classic long barrel taper. Hell, it even has an ugly pistol grip and uses a “ CLIP”. This gun is a killing machine! Handles like a dream. Very reliable. Feeds and functions butter smooth with every cartridge.(Thanks MDT). As you can tell by my comments, I am very happy with the plan that has come to be. I have coyotes, hogs and deer on my hunting property. My shots are usually less than 200 yards but some places can stretch out to 550 yards. I can his 8” plates with first cold bore at any distance.

That is a great setup! I have been off and on about a chassis for a lightweight hunting rifle. I might have to give one a spin and see how I like it.

Light weight hunting rifles do have their place. I have a two Rem Model 7's in 223 Rem that I've used for years as my stalking rifles for groundhogs.

For me there was nothing more enjoyable than roaming the rolling hay fields looking for shot opportunities. The lightweight Model 7's made it more enjoyable. Unfortunately, I don't do a lot of stalking anymore due to my physical limitations. However, there are a few short fields I hunt where the Model 7 is perfect since all shot opportunities are less than 200 yards so the 7's still sees field action.

I did re-barrel both with Douglas Match barrels, 20's in length and replaced the factory plastic stocks with B&C Medalists stocks which significantly improved precision. While this increased the weight slightly, it was worth it for the improved precision.

I have a very similar set up on a MDT lightweight stock. I have a Kelby Atlas action set up with 2 bolts and 5 barrels; 221 Fireball, 6.5 x 47 Lapua, 7 BR, 30 BR, and 308 Win. Fun gun to shoot and the light weight stock makes up for the slightly heavy barrels. Have yet to use the 221 Fireball, but everything else will shoot 1\4" groups if I do my part and ease up on the caffeine.
