New lenses (after Cataract Surgery)

Back in the spring I had a range trip with a bunch of friends from church, they are not as into rifles as I am so we did a wheel gun Wednesday trip. I shoot terrible and only discover what the problem was a week and a half latter when i went to the eye doctor. Cataracts, were the problem. Got the lense replaced and I am going to today to see if all my restrictions will be removed and I can shoot again. As I look in the mirror I can see that I am way uglier and more abused and beat up than I had previously thought.

Also coming off cataract surgery to both eyes . Got them done in July and first week in August and I can even see the X in the X-ring now . Scary thought . I might mention that I have also started using yellow lensed glasses , and that has improved the sight picture greatly . Helped "brighten" the scope picture for me . Might be worth trying for others . Many thanks to Dr. Reiss and the Team at Eye Physicians and Surgeons of Arizona .

My turn soon. Consult with the surgeon on Wednesday and set a date for the surgery on first eye followed by the second eye about three weeks later. We've been waiting for them to get big enough for surgery for eight years now. Only just now getting to that size and I'm noticing a lot of "halo" effect around lights lately. I've worn glasses for about 45 years or so and really looking forward to not needing them. Will still need them for reading, since three different eye doctors tell me the bifocal versions have a pretty high rate of failure of one type or another.

When i was checked in the spring, my vision was 20-40. It got considerably worse till I got all my ducks in a row and found someone that I wanted to cut on my eye. He operated on Aug 24 and on the 25th he wanted to see me for a look see. I read the chart that day and was 20-25 but he said my eye was still dilated from surgery. Today he told me my eye was 20 and then I read another smaller line and about half of the line smaller than that. I am very pleased with the work he did and very glad to be able to see again. No lumber sawing or sanding for another week or more, no finishing the paint on the bush hog, no lawn mowing. But shooting can commence at once. YA

The most improvement I noticed was my vision improved considerably when driving at night with headlights in my eyes.
Still can’t shoot worth a crap but I can see my misses.

Forum Boss: Yes, I have cataracts. At night, from half a block away, an overhead street light looks like a 12-foot diameter starburst. Headlights in an adjacent opposite lane are very unpleasant.

I had cataract repair a number of years ago. Just got new glasses for reading and computer. My eyes are now at 20-20, first time in my life. I still wear my glasses, to prevent misplacing them. How ever I shoot gophers without corrective lenses.

I am the odd man out. Had a cataract fixed in my right eye with followup laser treatment. Wish I had not had the surgery. Ever since I've had vision troubles I didn't have before. It's like a translucent shade gets pulled down in front of my eye. I can see but it clouds up. Doc says all is well and normal for my age. BS. Optometrist says it is normal too. BS. Need a 3rd opinion.

Had mine done in May & June, I don't need glasses anymore but not as good as I had hoped for. Had dry eye in one eye before now it is in both eyes and worse than ever, constant tearing and cloudy vision. Dr. says the dry eye should clear up but for now artificial tears 4-6 times a day.

Had it done last December. I had cataracts and multi focus lenses put in bot eyes a week apart. Best thing I ever done. Even took red dots off some of my pistols. Took about 3 months for my body to catch up with my eyes
Was having problems with dry eyes so I had tear ducts plugged. No a complete fix but a good 90% better

Had both eyes done 2 or 3yrs ago. 1st pair of glasses at 10yrs old, moved to contacts in '82 right up until cataract surgery. I'd worn reading glasses with contacts for at least 15yrs so told the Dr I wanted distance vision as priority. Still wear reading glasses for close up, have them on now, but sure is nice to not need them for anythig else.

So just curious? as I will have to have the cataract surgery in the future. When shooting with a high power scope and having the distance lenses put in for correction, can you see thru the scope without glasses, or do you need the reading glasses to see thru the scope ?

Thanks

Same question I asked Friday and he told me no glasses. I am taking them on Wednesday just to cover all my bases and I will try it both ways and see whats what.

Have had multiple eye surguries, was leagally blind without glasses, had the lasik surgury in both eyes, was good, then developed cataracts in both reyes so got new lenses that corrected to four feet, as I used a computer 12-14 hours a day. With distance only glasses corrected to 20-20 for shooting. First time in 20 years went to a match and shot a 36x40 without sight settings or a spotter. Missed the first target in four banks, adjusted and clean the rest. I shoot reacive targets, steel, not paper, so. You go to the best you can find and have them do their best work, for the best outcome. Tell them you are a champion shooter and you need to see well. I had to have my first cataract surgery redone, due to the prior laser alteration,, but no biggie, it was done and redone correctly to the alteration.

The lenses can be changed out and vision further altered or corrected, so......

I had mine done 25 yrs ago, it was still surgery in a surgical theater with a anesthesiologist the whole deal. It ended my competitive skeet shooting as I had double vision for a couple years and by the time I could see only one clay bird I'd lost the edge. I could no longer see receiver sights , just a fuzzy blur, not enough to discern the center unless it was a 5/8" disc with a tiny aperture. I had to scope all my rifles and sell off the collectable shooters that weren't D&T'd. So mine was the horror story.

A little story, I was near sighted my whole life and was far sighted after the surgery so I could see in the distance but needed readers to see things close. I went coyote hunting for the first time and thought it was great not to have to wear glasses. Fog set in and I got turned around, whipped out my compass and couldn't read the letters on it and it was old and the paint on the pointers had faded so you couldn't tell the north end of the pointer. I spent 8hrs trying to find my way back to the truck by the time I found the trail back I was seriously looking for a dead tree to spend the night near.

My wife had hers done a few years ago and what a difference. Just an outpatient procedure at a eye clinic.

The most fun was, I took my glasses (Rx) off to shoot and my adult sons put theirs on. I loved it.
also nice to not have to have those oversized shooting glasses to go over my Rx glasses.

The only real way to avoid any kind of glasses after cataract surgery is to have the light adjustable lens implanted. They are becoming more popular.

The downside is the entire process takes about 50 days, due to the return visits to adjust the lens. I had a total of three visits before I achieved 20/20 vision with no correction. You also have to wear dark Glasses untill they finally “lock” the lens.

The other downside is cost. Insurance did not cover mine, as I did not have cataracts bad enough. I just couldn’t see.
However, my wife is having the same procedure this month, she has cataracts to the extent that insurance is picking up about 50% of the cost, which in total is around $11,000.
