new Lapua brass for 6PPC ??

if I get Lapua 220 Russian brass and run through 6 PPC size die with expander button and seat a Barts ultra what will the outside neck dia be,,I have a 6PPC rifle coming with a 272 neck and wonder what I am in for to make brass and get shooting,,

would the Norma 6 PPC brass be better for this chamber neck dia or will the Lapua 220 brass necks be thick enough for the 272 neck dia,,

thanx eric

The Norma brass has thinner necks, which would probably result in more clearance than you would like, with your chamber neck dimension.

If i remember right its 270 or 271. I did check when the blue boxes came out but i cant remember right now. Youll have to check each box from now on just to make sure its no more than 271. Some boxes may be close because i think my no turn reamer is 272 but ive never used it so i cant remember that either. If youre gonna compete with it you may want to consider a 269 or 268 because as good as the lapua brass is you still need to at least uniform the necks for pure ppc accuracy.

ok thanx,,I will get the 220 Russsian Lapua brass and check neck dia of loaded round and as long as it isnt over .271 will fireform then find the thinnest side of thinnest piece and turn all necks to that size,,

would be nice if Lapua just made brass for everything,, ;)

I'm shooting a .269 neck and a Norma case goes right in my chamber without any trouble. The Norma is just a little loose in my chamber for what I like.
I would like to turn it about a .001 to true the sides.
With a lapua case you have to up size the neck, turn the neck then fire form the case. With a .271 neck, Lapua may clear, I don't know.

Are you sure that it is a 272 neck or is that a typo?? ;) WD

supposed to be new no turn PPC chamber with 272 neck

Reason I asked as this past summer I used both and they would have been quite loose in a 272 neck. Boyd is correct that the Norma would have thinner necks, however the Norma had more consistent in neck thickness than the box of Lapua 220 Russian that I had. Both work well, but some rifles definitely prefer one brand over the other. Good luck with your new rifle. :) WD

Hope that expander button has a good tapper on it.... If your talking about a 6PPC FL die with a expander button....222 hole to a 243 hole is tough w/o a good tapper expander ...

The best way to expand .220 Russian cases that I have tried is the PMA Tool expander die, with one of his carbide expander mandrels that has a very long taper. He offers several styles. With plenty of lube, the other secret is to do the expansion in several steps, that is insert the mandrel to the point where you feel the effort start to climb to the point where going any farther would possibly cause the case to become more crooked. This takes a little practice. AT that point the ram is reversed enough for the mandrel to disengage the neck, and then another attempt to expand made. By doing this perhaps four times, the expander will finally be fully in the neck without degrading the cases runout. It doesn't take all that long, once you get the hang of it, and you will be rewarded with expanded cases that are almost as straight as untouched .220 Russian brass. (I am writing this before my first cup of coffee, so if is less than perfect, perhaps you will understand.)

I have 20 pieces with headstamp Sako 6PPC USA, I have owned them for years. I now have a PPC reamer ordered so may finally get to use them. My reamer is a .268" from recommendations here.

Unless you special ordered a ppc-usa reamer you may not get to use em yet!

from the Home page here at 6BR.com ,,looks like I can just size 220 Rissian brass load and shoot to form brass in .272 neck,,then just clean up necks to the thinnest side and wind up with a loaded round in the .267-268 range,,if this doesnt shoot to expectations my smith has a conventional PPC reamer that we can use to "fix" it,,

No-Turn Option
There is increasing interest in a “no-turn” 6mm PPC among varminters and club-level competitors. Gene Beggs and others have found that a no-turn chamber gives up little in accuracy, though serious competitors will still want to turn their necks. With a flat-base bullet with pressure ring, a loaded 6PPC round made from Lapua 220 Russian brass will measure about 0.271″ in diameter. (You may want to measure your own lot of brass with your particular bullet.) Therefore, you’ll want a .272″ chamber neck, at a minimum, a .273″ for “fatter” bullets, and for varminters, we recommend a .274″ chamber neck. Going with a no-turn chamber lets you spend less time fussing with brass and more time shooting. Just fire-form the cases with a strong (but not max) load of powder and the bullets seated hard into the lands. Trim the cases to length after fire-forming and you’re good to go.

I am not aware of anyone that is competing in short range benchrest with a no turn neck chamber. It amazes me that some people seem to think that turning a few case necks is a big deal. It isn't. Unlike typical varmint loading, for such things as ground squirrels and prairie dogs, virtually all short range group shooters work with small batches of cases, that they load between individual matches. For this sort of shooting, 25 cases is plenty to get through a weekend match. New shooters can fire form their cases in their regular barrels, until they wear one out, at which point it can be used as a fire forming barrel. Match shooting is not about good enough, it is about doing the absolute best that you can. As it has always been, accuracy is obtained by paying close attention to all of the variables, and knowing the relative value of each. Often shooters express a desire to shoot better, but when confronted with the reality of what would be required to do that, immediately start looking for workarounds. Until you are able to equal their performance, it is more advisable to copy those who are achieving what you aspire to.

I didnt order the rifle this way,,just got a good deal on it and gonna try it is as first,,if it doesnt work then cutting about an inch off bbl and chambering with a .262 neck and turning the necks on down wont be a big deal,,maybe even trashing the whole PPC idea and getting a 30BR bbl for the new rifle,,
