new hunting cartridge,6.8 x 260) ?

Thought of this today.A 270 version of a 308,243,260,257 class.
I don't know about it,maby there is one.It may be a good deer round.A mediocre round with a little more punch than a 243,257 or 260.Bullets could be 6.8spc 115grainers,130gr cor-lokt, 130gr speerGRANDSLAM,110&130gr barnesTRIPLE X,or other bullets in 90-140grs.Tell me what you guys think.

I gather it has been tried quite a few times in the past. It never took off as a hunting round because comparison with 270W was hard to escape, and those wanting to use a short action had the 7mm-08. It would be a fine round, but pressed to make a name for itself in the company of some established cartridges.

JMHO butI see no practical purpose for this round or a 270 win for that matter. Go with a 7-08 and actually have an assortment of bullets to choose from and better performance.

+1

If it weren't for the crapload of press from Jack O'Connor the 270 Winchester would have passed into oblivion,or at least be on life support) long ago.

7mm-08 has better performance than 270W ?
The difference in accuracy due to case design isn't going to show for hunting. If you are figuring an efficiency argument, that leads to 308W.

Actually the two cartridges I was comparing wer the 7-08 and the 270-08, since this is the cartridge in question. My point about the 270 win is that it has a very limited bullet selection and will be outdone by a 280 Rem if you wish to compare apples to apples.

Why stop at 7mm? There is a truly great selection of bullets at 30 cal, more bullet base area, more efficiency and better barrel life. One could choose 308W or 30-06, depending on one's taste in fruit.

Is there something special about 7mm, such as a particular relationship between cross-sectional bore area, bullet weight and ballistic coefficient ?

I have always argued for 7mm, but this time I will play the other side of the argument to see with what logic others are running.
