From what I can see it looks like some kind of small ring mauser. Most small ring mausers should be chambered in a lower pressured cartridge than our modern actions. You need to show your rifle to someone that can identify which action it is, then make a decision as to what can be done safely. You might just keep it as an heirloom. Good Luck

What caliber is your Great Uncles Mauser ? I had a 8x57 that I used for deer hunting and now is my nephews deer rifle.

Listen to Wapiti. Get the identity of the gun confirmed. Some older guns are better left in original condition, to keep the value on the collector market. Some are not a good base for a build and could be a "waste of money spent".

The "cold blue" reblueing didn't help the collector value any. Clean it up, have it checked by a gunsmith and if it is pronounced OK, use it for what it is. A reliable hunting rifle.

Can't see clearly in the picture, but is it a model 96 Swedish Mauser?

If it is 6.5X55 it is, and a fine rifle it is. I'll bet it shoots close to 1 MOA at 100 yds.

This cartridge is good enough that it is a popular bench rest caliber in Europe. Many good bullets for it and many loads.

The small ring Mausers are potentially fine guns, especially the 96 model. The European pressure standards are some what higher than the SAMMI specs. American ammunition manufacturers are very strongly effected by their lawyers!

I just took a closer look and zoomed in. It does look like an early Swede. You may have a gem there, just waiting to be shot. And I think that's your gun in the "trying to post a pic" post. Looks like you have a sporterized Swedish mauser. If you remove the scope and find Karl Gustoff or Husquevarna and a date, it's a Swede. Not much collector value, but a high probability that it'll shoot well.

since I figured out how to post pics I'll post another one. I have a box of shells I bought for it a long time ago, I have shot the rifle. There is Germany stamped just in front of the bottom plate, when I cold blued it there was a date stamped into it under one of the scope mounts if memory serves me correctly I believe it was 1919. the rifle is 8mm mauser.

That would make it a German K 98 8mm. From the picture, it's hard to see the front ring. Google mauser markings KAR, or German mausers for more info. Lots of sites for them. It's a whole sub culture. Can still be a good shooter. There are other guys on this site that would have an idea of what might be done with it, if anything. You could frame your post like: What to do with this old Mauser? Good luck.

Thanks Joshb : I was pretty sure it was a model 98. It has been along time since I have even taken it out of the safe, there was some safety work done on the bolt assy before I got it, What are you referring to about the front ring? I can post a few more pics. I have been reading a little bit here and there about mausers and thought I would get it out to look at it and see what I've got.

Hey, grey. From my limited knowledge, mausers are either large ring or small ring. I "think" the small ring is the earlier, weaker, design. The large ring is a later and stronger version. A swedish mauser is the small ring . K98 s are the large ring. The small ring actions have a 1.3 in diameter. The large ring is 1.4 in. Diameter. Some one that knows more will hopefully chime in, as I'm just getting into these fine old guns.
