New Guy Questions on a build

First I would like to say Hi to everyone I have lurked here for along time but finaly found a question the search button cant answer

I have decied to get alittle more involved in Tactical Comps
and I was wondering if this would be a sound chambering for a comp rifle

I will start with I do not reload I havent gotten around to learning how as I dont know a soul who does I know most people are gonna say stick with the 308 for a tactical rifle but I all ready have a 308 herein lies the problem match grade 308 ammo is between 26 and 40 dollars a box here but thankfully I have found what I think to be a better solution

There is a RAUG AMMO importer in the city I live in that can sell me 6x47mm Swiss Match the 105gr amax load with a bc of .500
at 3000fps I have read here that the brass is better then lapua
but the real kicker is I can get it for 19.50 per box by the case lot
I am wondering if this would be a good comp rifle any input would be great and thanks for looking

You can get Black Hills 175 gr. 308 ammo for the same or less price. Stick with the 308 for Tac Comps and use your money on shooting.

Think about reloading as it will save you about 50% in ammo cost and let you tailor your ammo for your gun. You can get a simple one stage press set up and be up and reloading in no time.

the 6x47 Swiss is a very accurate cartridge and ammo for it has only recently become available here.

Most of the "tac" shooters use the 308 because that's what they're used to and because that's what the military uses.. There's a lot of "sniper wannabes" shooting those comps... you've obviously shot in some of them, so you'll know what I'm talking about.

I've won many matches shooting a 243......

David Tubb kicked everyone's collective asses for years with one until he developed the 6XC,which isn't any better in my opinion)

The factory 6x47 ammo uses Lapua bullets.... the driving band on the Lapua's is a tiny bit smaller than the Sierra's, Bergers etc and you need a "tighter" bore to shoot them to their potential. The Krieger and PacNor barrels are usually a tenth or so tighter than most of the other makers.

I can not find 308 match in black hills at any where near this price and mail order places in the US will not ship ammo to Canada that is why I started looking at this ammo and thank for pointing me to sniperhide I have been reading there for about a year or so and there is alot of great info there

I tried that as well the closest Midway dealer in canada is about 4 hours from here and they have been waiting for there blackhills order to clear customs for 4 months and they want 26.00 per box if you buy a case and 29.50 in singles
some things in Canada can drive you nuts

Jackel,

I assume you don't reload. If not you may want to look into it. Match ammo is expensive enough here in the states and as you have said it is even worse in Canada.

The 6x47 SM is a great cartridge, but the barrel life is limited. It is similar to the 243 Win. I would look into the 6.5x47 Lapua as it has better barrel life and should perform well. Check with you importers to see what it runs. They have three factory loadings -- 108 Scenar, 123 Scenar and 139 Scenar. I am currently building a "tac" rifle in it to see how it does.

That being said, I will also say that reloading for a 308 is the way I would go if you can. There are a number of matches which are 308 only -- heck maybe you should do a switch barrel with 308 and 6.5x47 Lapua or 6x47 SM.
