New guy here, need advice on rifle caliber

Hello all, been spending some time here recently and really impressed with the quality of content and feel of community on this board. I am planning on purchasing a Cooper varmint rifle and was originally planning on finding a .223 but the more reading I do the more the 20 VarTarg interests me. The rifle will primarily be used to punch paper at 100 & 200. I have lots of handgun reloading experience but none with rifle. I am somewhat intimidated by having to form cases never having done so. Does anyone care to offer an opinion on which caliber is considered more intrinsically accurate? Thanks for the feedback!

Bob: Go to the home page for this site and read the articles for the 20 CAL, 223 REM/AI, and 6PPC. There is a wealth of information there that might help you with your decision.

Well, both 6br and 6ppc would both suit your needs,

lapua brass in 6 br is excellent. in my 6 br rifle i shoot 58 to 80 grain varmint bullets in my new brass. When its fired i then use my match bullets for killer long range groups,I have a very fast twist). If you want to shoot shorter ranges just get a slower twist barrel, with flat based bullets. 2 advantages; 1 kill gophers and coyotes, 2 fireform brass. I would also go with a no turn neck, wich means reload less shoot more.

Here's the deal, i have a 6mmbr in a 1 in 7 twist, made for long range bullets) I full lenght resize, trim case, clean primer pocket, clean primer hole, clean inside of neck, thats it.. and i regularly get 5 shot groups in less than an inch at 300 yards. No bull. When i started shooting this barrel i just took a recommended load of this website, played with seating depths and powder charges and that was it.

The 6ppc uses 220 russian brass, One easy method in fireforming is to expand the neck and shoot a full 6 mm load. There are many fireforming thechniques but i think its the funnest way if your not a hard core benchrest competitor.

The 6ppc is the most accurate 100 and 200 yard cartridge in the world. The 6br and its cousins are the most accurate cartriges from 300 to 600 yards.

Oh yeah, a 58 grain bullet fired from a 6br in a 14 twist will be sent at 3500 fps + in probalbly less than a 1/4 inch at 100 yards
