New Guy Doesn’t Get 6.5mm as the Start of Big Stuff?

This forum has been exceedingly helpful to me in my return to 1K BR. However I am puzzled. For all the decades I have been involved in shooting and hunting the categories were as follows:

Small bore: Under 30 Cal

Med bore: 30 to under 45 Cal

Large bore: 45 Cal and up

Even in the target world, 40-50 caliber rifles are used. So how is it that 6.5mm is “big stuff?”

I'm no pro but I think it's just math in an equation that goes something like this: Generated recoil (comfort to shoot over long strings of fire) X Velocity (Flat shooting over long distance targets to reduce "arc") X BC. (Ballistic coefficient for wind bucking ability and energy retention over long distances).
There are probably many other reasons but I think it boils down to these 3 for the most part.

I get why we like 6mms for 1000 yd BR. However, I don’t get calling 6.5 and up as “big stuff”. If 6.5 is big, then we don’t even have a way to describe a Cheytac
or a 50 BMG.......

A number of years ago, this site was 6mmbr.com. Sometime ago it became accurateshooter.com Not only are the 6.5s lumped in with the big stuff, there are two boards for 6mm's. Yes, I agree that its odd to see a thread about the 6.5 grendel next to a 338 lapua thread but that's the way its always been. Can't tell you why its this way though.

Benchrest competition events have been dominated by 6mm cartridges, primarily 6ppc and 6mmbr and it's derivatives for quite awhile now, although other calibers are showing up more and more it seems in the last few years, but as mentioned, I think this site was set up to cater to those type of shooters and events originally. JMHO

Very true. I love everything from 20 cals to big boomers to handguns. This site has done an excellent job evolving and making it a very accommodating and friendly atmosphere for all of us.

I think that the rapid advancements in all aspects of shooting, optics, and reloading technology we have seen in recent years is greatly due to sites like this drawing in people from all walks of life and creating a massive public interest in striving for precision and accuracy.

This is the only forum where I am a member. I only read information on other sites.

Not everything in life has to make sense. Sometimes things just are what they are. A man will get further down the road of life if he doesn't always stop to smell the roses.

Simple. As somewhat stated previously, this is/was a 6mm forum. So that is the starting point. Anything bigger is big stuff. Anything smaller is small stuff.

Good eye! Except the “I” in the Myers-Briggs profile acronyms is more correctly “Internal” vs “Introverted.” But then we WOULD expect an INTJ to critique even the rules that gave definition to their personality type.

BTW, the guy who said things don’t always make sense has obviously not been around INTJs much........

I shot a 300 WSM when I competed in 1K BR a dozen years ago. Since I came back this past Feb I have been using a Dasher and my even make my next barrel a BRA. However, these are still small bores. Maybe I should take my Lott to the next Match. While throat life should be good I am not sure it will track so well. On the plus side the puller would be able to easily see the bullet holes.....

A few years ago, when I was much younger, I shot 30 calibers so 6.5 was smaller. Now that I'm older, I like the lighter recoiling cartridges more so 6.5 seems "bigger". One day I may go full circle and return to the .17 calibers of my youth. I still have my Red Rider bb gun. It doesn't kick much.

I'm one too, I was also judged by my peers to have an Expressive Driver social style, so the prick with the big mouth. In truth though, I'm way more on the analytical side of things. With age comes the comes the resistance to fight everything, I say wtf quite often and walk away, lol As in who cares.

As others noted, the site started as 6mmBR. And that category (which included 6BR improved) is still one of the most active all by itself. It may make sense to have a combined "0ther 6mm and 6.5mm" since 6.5 mm has become popular in the PRS game.

However, years ago, 6.5-284 was a popular F-Open chambering and it really was competing with 7mm SAUM and .30-caliber options.
