New from Florida -- LR Shooting Qs

Sierra developed the 168 gr. SMK for 600 yard shooting so I think Alvin will be fine for the time being. Don, you are a true sportsman to be helping Alvin as you have. Congratulations!

Alvin's goal is to get out to 800 yards. When the time comes and he would like to go to Shadd's Deer Farm with me we'll go to 600 if he would like. I'll have my stuff that will get us to 1000 yards accurately and easily. I was just pointing out what the 168smk was developed for.

Alvin if you read this, whenever you're wanting to go to my range as a guest give me a call and we'll set it up. We'll shoot out to 325 yards. Paper or steel, or both.

First of all , welcome , Alvin. This site is a treasure trove of information. The vast majority of members go above and beyond normal to be of assistance. Now to one part of your initial question; if you can find one of Vortex’s discontinued 6 X 24 Strike Eagles, they are in my opinion, the pinnacle of bang for your buck. The general close out price was $299. Additionally the Vortex Golden Eagle with the ECR-1 reticle is another great optic. Occasionally one will come up here for sale. Good luck with your new endeavor. It is quite an enjoyable pastime. Be aware though, it can quickly become an obsession.

Thank You, I appreciate you opinion and the information.
I think I'm on my way becoming obsessed.
I can feel what you mean by "above and beyond".
I am now being taught the beginners part of this hobby by Don, a very kind and sharing person.
It is really nice to be able to ask someone in the know and avoid spending too much.
Soon I will try my own rifle with his guidance.

I wish you all the best. I too have been fortunate enough to have a couple mentors. I’ve been shooting and competing since I was thirteen. ……Until five years ago, I had no idea how hopelessly ignorant that I was. I am learning though.

I wish March would come soon!
Or at least let the freezing be over.
Quick question, zeroing hunting scope on hunting rifle, .308, 3-9 x 40?
100 yards?
I'm going to try out the new ammo, 168 gr SMK

I’m back!
Moving forward in this hobby although slowly.
I got the scope now, EP5, and some ammo too.
The torque screwdriver is coming.
I can’t take off 2 screws from the Weaver mounts, should I apply some heat on it?

Try some kroil first. Then the heat.......carefully!!

Did you ever mention what rifle you are working with? a 308 win, but what model?

Many times you can take a factory rifle and improve accuracy by doing a few simple things like bedding, floating the barrel, and possibly a new trigger, or mainspring if it's an older rifle.

Start shooting first and see how it does and how you do. Getting down a good consistent hold between you and your rifle will be a good thing to focus on right off the bat. Work on you being consistent and then you can focus on everything else. Take your time and don't let the barrel get to hot or it'll get frustrating really quick.

Lots of other great advice here.

Welcome Alvin
You remind me of myself many years ago. We all have to start somewhere.
At one time I was self-convinced that I had such a good rifle in such a good caliber
but I had to admit to myself that something better might be out there. Then I discovered
THIS AWESOME website with AWESOME PEOPLE that just wanted to help and offer
helpful suggestions. What a Wonderful Journey it has been.
I will attest that anything you read on this site is by HONEST people or they won't last
long on here.
Quite a few years ago a top competition shooter had a scope up for sale and he said
he was retiring but this scope was the Best Target scope he had ever had and he guaranteed the scope to be good. Back then it was an 8x32 power Burris Signature with a "Peep Plex"reticle. I still have 3 of them on 3 rifles that have been outstanding scopes but they may be a bit hard to find nowadays but they will not be all that expensive.
Anyway, read a lot, think a lot, ask a lot and shoot as often as you can.
Best Wishes Alvin

For a budget, good optics are the first place to put money. Next would be a stock. If you're not comfortable and in a repeatable position, your precision and accuracy is going to suffer. Next is ammo. Put rounds down range. Then trigger, and other things later as you get comfortable.

My first 1000y rig was built on a r700, everything i bought used from either eBay or on here. I'm still shooting 700s and have 3 of them all capable of 1000y accuracy. The cheapest one I built for about $1200 all in. Its a 6br with sightron 36x, 40xbr stock, shilen trigger and a cbi remage barrel.

Hello All!

My name is Alvin John and I'm from North Central Florida. I am wanting to get into precision/long range shooting.
My limitation is I don't have much money but I do have a regular bolt action hunting rifle in .308.
I am thinking of taking a $300 2 day class for long range shooting up to 800 yards.
I would need a scope and 200 rounds of match ammunition.

Would a 12X42 30mm scope be suitable for such shooting?
What ammunition would be cheap but good enough for such shooting?
I plan to go into handloading but figured I might as well buy some Match ammunition and use the shells for subsequent handloaded ammunition.

I also want to get into rimfire shooting.
If you don’t have a lot of money….stop right now. This game is not for the faint of heart or light in the pocketbook.
