New Forster dies arrived, BUT!

Hi All,
my new dies arrived and it was nice to see the box sitting there when I got home from work. I do have a small problem though, with the Forster bushin / bump die I got (6.5x47L). The decapping pin will not stay in the the end of the decapping stem. The pin has thick and thin ends, and neither will stay in the end of the stem, with the small knurled "lock thingy" done up tight.
I have emailed Forster, and I'm waiting on a reply.
Anyone had this or have any idea of a fix?
I'm in New Zealand, so its not quick thing to send the die or parts back. I did think about using a loctite type of product, to hold/glue it in there. But I'm concerned that it could come out and get lost. The other thing I thought of is getting a friend to turn something up on his lathe, but its quite small.
Any help appreciated.
cheers

I have one in 6X47L and have exactly the opposite problem. I can't seem to get the decapping pin to come out. The small end goes through the flash hole.

Degrease the pin and hole.

Coat the large end of the pin with a thin film

of Red Loctite and you'll be good to go.

If you ever have to change it ,heat will break the

bond.

A new pin can be made of a Drill Blank or a

Reamer Blank.

Regards & good shooting,

Steve

Hi All,
thought I'd update this. I have been emailing back and forth with Forster (remember I'm in New Zealand), to try and solve this problem. They have been helpfull, and made suggestions on possible fixes. I'm quite practical, so had tried most of them already. To round up and get to the point, they are sending me a new decapping stem and decapping pin retainer.
That is good customer service, I'd say. Better if they didn't have to send me the replacement parts, but there has been no hesitation to help, and sort out the fault.

Thanks Forster!
cheers

270Guy,
I imagine the new one will do the same thing, I have a couple of there dies and they both do the same thing. They do a wonderful job of resizing but the decapping pin and assembly is funky, I don't use my good dies to decap with, if I did Forester probably wouldn't get my business. I use a universal decapping die to decap with but if you go that route remember you need a small decapping rod for the for the 6X47L I believe it is .062 since your so far away I would order two for when one of them brakes and it will. I don't think I would hesitate especially since you have a new one coming to loctite the pin is as already suggested, hope this helps and good luck.

Can't provide a fix for your problem - all my Forster dies work great, but a few years ago I bought a universal decapping die (RCBS I think) after I broke a pin and bent the shaft on an RCBS die. It's a really handy piece of gear to have around, is cheap, and gives you a work-around for this type situation.....

270guy,
I am a huge fan of Forster dies, I don't think you can get a better threaded die, but there decapping system sucks at best. I believe when you get your new system from Forster you will have the same problems,I hope I am wrong but I don't think so. Here is a easy and affordable solution for you.

Since you are so far away order a sack of each Hornady decapping pins

With the extra pins you should be setup for years and you will no longer be getting that nasty suit off the spent primers all over your expensive Forster dies.
My friends just got back from your beautiful country w/pictures
WOW is all I can say, what a beautiful country. For years I have planned a red stag hunt for my retirement present to myself, with the way the world is crumbling apart maybe I should go now! If for some reason I could no longer be here New Zealand would be my next pick :) Good luck to you sir.

bozo699,
thanks for the info :). I'm still looking at getting a Forster Full length die to complete my set for the 6.5x47Lapua. So will likely follow your suggestion, and get a decapping die of some description then.
Yep, I like it here too! ;D Although, I have been accross your large country, by train, and did some driving in Utah, Colorado, South Dakota. And spent some time in Tennesee and Missouri. SD looked like a fine place to live, but perhaps a little too much snow over the winter for me.

Not to hijack my own thread, but if you did come down for a Red Stag, you might want to look into hunting some other game at the same time. Like Sika deer, Fallow deer, Tahr, Chamois. I hunt Reds, Fallow, Tahr - Want to geta Sika and Chamois

I don't pay trophy fees, and all animals are definitely fair chase (no fences), although I'm still after "Trophies", although they are all trophies to me. The fallow bucks were more of a cull, on a beef farm.

270guy,
I know it is a extra step using a decapping die and many guy's don't like the extra work. I don't like running a expander ball through my necks, which isn't mandatory when using decapping pin but I don't like the corrosive and abrasive soot getting on my dies and good presses so I also use a separate inexpensive press for decapping, these are just my opinions not chipped in stone facts. Thank you very much for sharing your hunting photo's with me, they are beautiful animals :) I will cherish the day I get to New Zealand even if I go home empty handed just to have been there and see the beautiful country, animals, and people will be good enough for me.
Cheers,Wayne

The big end goes into the stem. If you have not already tried it take two pairs of pliers and use one to hold the stem shaft where it is not threaded and the other to screw down the decapping pin retainer. I have 10 Forster sizing dies and had to do that with almost all of them, but once it is done they seem to stay tight. BTW, it does not require a lot of pressure to tighten them.

All the Forster decap pins I have that are thicker on one end are made for use with brass that has a smaller flash hole such as the 6mmppc. You might want to double check your brass before using a "universal" decapper. Most have the larger pins.........Also I have a couple Redding dies that had to be tightened the same way..................

amamnn,
That's why I suggested those dies, they come with both .060 and .080 pins and I suggested buying a package of each size of replacement pins ;)

Hi All,
small box arrived from Forster today, with a decapping stem, pin and retainer. Thanks again Forster for the excellent follow up customer service.

bozo699 - no worries with the photos. If you took look at the other photos via the thumbs, you can see we culled out a few fallow on one farm. They all went in the freezer. Deer can be hunted year round here, as there is no set season. Obviously if you want antlers, you need to be here when when the stags have them. Thanks for your advice on the decapping dies :).
cheers

Let us know how you go with the new Forster bushing bump die, I have been thinking of buying one in 308. I have heard they are sensitive to reliable shoulder bump but this may be hearsay. Currently using a Lee Collet and a Redding FLS.
