New Feature Thursday: "user mentions"

A lot of threads go something like this:

"... I don't know the answer, but I've seen <insert_user_here> talk about it before" or "<such_and_such> knows a lot about this, we should get him/her to chime in".

If you are familiar with a lot of newer software and sites, you might know how to use "user mentions". Essentially, it just allows you to reference someone in a topic and then the system will notify them that they've been mentioned and draw their attention to it. If you don't want to be notified when you are mentioned in a topic, you can disable mention notifications in your profile.

To do so, you just stick an "@" in front of their name. For example, saying @Forum Boss will cause the system to notify the Forum Boss that he has been mentioned in this topic. Facebook users will recognize this functionality, as will users of other software packages that support the functionality (Slack, HipChat, Jira, others...)

I guess that "user mentions" feature really works. I saw a status alert pop up and it took me right to this thread.

check your profile and make sure you allow notifications from mentions...
