This report in from our friend Asa Yam:
"At this past weekend's Arizona State Palma Championships, Jim Murphy of Owensboro, KY set a new F-Class record for the Palma course of fire,15 shots for score at each distrance of 800, 900, and 1000 yards). Jim's score was an amazing 450-44x, out of a possible 450-45x!!! The one dropped X was at 1000 yards.
Actually, the F-Class record was tied twice and broken twice at this event. John Dink and Larry Bartholome both tied the old record of 450-41X. Jon Cowee held a "new" national record for couple of minutes with a 450-42X. Then Jim finished up."
Jim shot a 6.5-284. Here's the equipment list. Surprisingly, Jim was using N170 powder, not the "favored" H4831. And so much for the idea that a faster powder gives less muzzle turbulence for better accuracy.
Barnard Action
30†Broughton Barrel 6.5-284
Metal work done by Jim
Stocked by Alex Sitman
8.5 X 32 BR Nightforce
Lapua Brass
Russian Primers
56.5gr Vihta N170
Sierra 142s MolyCoated Meplat Uniformed
3020 fps

What makes this especially impressive is that these are 15-shoot groups, with targets pulled and marked between shots. That means Jim had to wait 20-30 seconds between shots... an eternity to the 1K Benchrest guys. F-Class uses Palma targets at 1000 yards, with a 1moa,10") X-ring. Congrats to Jim!!
