New experience priming

Some months ago there was a thread on Reloading Tips. One of the better ones was ): keep your hands clear of the cartridge when priming. I've never had one go off but I'm always wearing safety glasses and my hands are well away from the case, just in case.

Glad you were not hurt general.

Never in 65 yrs, but I still wear glasses and point the mouth of the case away from me and look away if I'm using a press.... John

Earlier this evening I figured I'd prime the last of the prepped brass I had laying around for the AR 15, I use a RCBS Turret press for this. This batch gets Win SR primers , while priming I had one pop off . Quite un nerving to say the least. I didnt notice any undue resistance or difficulty , it does produce a nice white hot flame out of the neck of the case. If one wasn't bad enough the Win primers gave an encore performance. I had 2 of them go off during priming. I finished the rest of the priming operation with my eyes closed while seating the primer. Any one else have a similar experience? I've been loading for 40 years and never experienced this with a press priming set up.

I would like to capitalize on what @fyrewall suggested regarding the crimp and the primer pocket. You mentioned brass for AR15. Are you using Nato 5.56 brass or .223 brass. Make sure you are reaming the primer pockets and chamfering the crimp well if 5.56 brass. I too would suggest reverting to a hand seating tool for the primers. It might also be excessive pressure from over-seating with the press regardless of which type of brass. Hope this helps.

None then 2 and then none-suggests either primer issue(compound out of place and exposed to friction) or some thing out of normal on priming mech. I'm with primer anomaly.

Primers going off while reloading is like that old saying about pilots and wheels up landings. "There are those that have, then there are those that will." It happens.

Never had one go off in 50 years. Tried to push one sideways in a pocket. It was crushed and didn’t go off.

Like others, I've been loading close to 50 years, rifle and pistol, and never had one go off.

Many years ago I switched to a hand held priming tool - a one primer at a time tool, Sinclair brand, which gives you a better feels of the resistance to seating a primer. I switched because I wanted a more precise feel to seating primers to improve consistency for precision shooting not because of any safety concerns with my old RCBS primer tube / press mounted primer arm but having a tube of primers in close proximity to priming always made me uneasy.

I'd definitely investigate and try to determine the reason for the detonation of two primers. First, I'd set that lot of primers aside until you've thoroughly inspected your equipment and have ruled any equipment related issues.

If you do use that lot of primers I'd wear a face shield and safety glasses and single prime each case away from other primers and powder.
