New Die Preparation

I just received a bunch of new dies... RCBS de-capping, Forster FL sizing and Micrometer seating dies. Before I use them, what sort of preparation does anyone do? I've heard of some people de-greasing the die, lubing the dies, polishing the dies, etc.... Any tips?

I always take mine apart and clean them before I use them. Keep them clean as you use them. The best way to preserve your dies are to make sure the brass is clean and use a good lube. Do not over lube. I'm sure someone will have a better answer but that is what I do.

If they're a name brand, you need only take them apart & clean them before using. The makers try to ensure their products stay clean once they're packaged, but stuff can still get in & create an abrasion hazard.

Taking them apart & putting them back together also gives you the chance to get acquainted with how they're to be adjusted, if you're new to that brand. They all do the same thing, but sometimes in a slightly different manner.

I'm not sure what's to be gained by polishing a die unless you've used it, only to find there's something you don't think's quite right. Best recourse there is to get on the phone & find out what the manufacturer intended; you may have a new one coming!

When you say "take them apart and clean them", how specifically are you cleaning them? What are you using and how are you using it?

I use an appropriate size bore jag and patches with a suitable solvent. Sometimes a caliber-sized patch is enough, sometimes a patch one size larger. It depends on what part of the die I'm cleaning.

As for solvent: Hoppes, Shooters Choice, Butches Bore Shine... anything I'd use on a barrel, short of Sweet's 7.62!) works fine. Then a dry patch wherever a wet one has touched, then reassemble.

A thin, wiped on film of gun oil is helpful in keeping rust at bay for the non-stainless parts.

I usually give 'em a good blasting with Brakleen, then shoot 'em dry with the air hose.

Maybe a touch of lube on the threads and you're done.
