I bought a heavy 6BR earlier this year off this site. It's is a lot of fun to shot off the bench, but it’s pretty useless as a deer hunting tool. Well, with deer season winding down, and us having some unusually colder weather; I thought I may hunt around the house and kill some of those pesky does. What more comfortable stand than from the house itself… I set up a portable bench on the back deck overlooking the pond across the back yard. About as far as I want to carry the 21 lb gun. Here is the view from my “deer stand”.
If you look just down the barrel there is a little “hole” in the woods on the other side of the pond. There is a split rail fence @ 298 yards from the bench. Deer come out from time to time to visit, just behind it.
Yesterday evening, I decided to try out my heavy gun with some Berger 105 VLD’s. My rifle likes those pretty good anyway (they shoot very well). Just before dark, a big doe came in & gave a good broadside shot. I turned a few knobs on my rest, knocked the safety off (closed the bolt) & touched the 2oz jewel. With almost no recoil, I watch the bullets smack and the sassy slick give that all so familiar “death kick”.
I ejected the Lapua case, placed it in the box. Next step of any good hunt… I stepped over, fired up the grill & threw on a few pork chops. 20 minutes later; I sat down & had a nice dinner with the family. Afterward, my 12 year old son & I suited up for the cold, jumped on the four-wheeler and rode around the pond. I went to were she was standing & we found no sign of blood. After 2-3 minutes of looking hard; my son looked at me & said: “Are you sure you hit ‘er”??? I told him to keep looking…
Eventually, I just went the way she left, looking studious for some bright red liquid in the ruffled leaves. After I got about 15-20 yards from the hit, I shined the light ahead & and was flashed back with a white belly. She had barley made it maybe 25 yards. This is what she looked like when I got to her.
The entrance was a unnoticeable pinhole tight behind the shoulder (opposite side from photo) & exited as you see about 3” back from the shoulder. The Bergers did the trick (just wish there would have been better blood trail) with a 2950 muzzle velocity. Impact shows to have been somewhere around 2500fps & the bullet dropped just over 10 inches from the 100 yard zero. Maybe I don’t need a magnum after all
( JK- I’ve killed several with my other 6br before, hadn’t let me down yet)
Of course the winner/victim photo.
I'll try the same thing again soon, but with deer tenderloin instead of the pork chops!
