New Coyote Rifle

Mike in Oregon

Gold $$ Contributor
I got this new Ruger M77 Hawkeye Predator chambered in 204 back from my gunsmith a couple weeks ago, after he did his work. Today I was able to lap the rings and mount the scope. This will become my new primary coyote gun. I'm hoping to find a load using a 35 to 39-grain bullet.

My XR100 actually shoots the 40 Vmax into bugholes too, I was surprised being a twelve twist and 800 feet elevation. Try a box of the factory Hornady stuff it may just surprise you Mike. In reality you cant go too far wrong with a 204, they just plain shoot well.
I have a XR 100 and those 40g vmax won't stabilize in mine. But the 40g Bergers and 39 blitzking shoot very well.

Looks good, @Mike in Oregon.

My designated coyote rifle is a Savage Axis II that I rebarreled with a 24" E.R. Shaw sporter "over run special" barrel.

I did take 2 deer with it the first year. But the 257 Roberts and up seems to put them down much better.

I tried the 75gr Sierra HP Varmint.
Again, was having some inconsistency with terminal performance.

Switched over to the 90gr Sierra BlitzKing. Haven't lost one since.

Pic is a 1" orange sticker at 200 meters with the 75gr Sierra HP Varmint. 5 shots.
Wind caught me out on the last shot.
