New cleaning rod

I just got my new cleaning rod from Denny Phillips today. I was so pleased with it, I thought I'd post a couple of pictures.

It's nice and stiff, straight, and very well polished. I've really grown to like these nice slim handles and this one also turns very easily. It almost makes me want to clean my .22, well, not really.

And, yes, that close-up of the finish is pretty well focused. You can see a few bits on the top that are crisp, it just looks like it's out of focus 'cause the finish is so nice it's reflecting the towel it's laying on.

Nice stainless rod looks like. I really have a hard time finding a 22 rod of the right diameter and a a jag that uses the right patch to clean a rimfire. What patch do you use for a rimfire. And what diameter is the Phillips rod.

I haven't picked up a jag for it yet, Stephen, so I can't say yet. I have been meaning to contact Larry Allred,I think it is), the guy who took over David Wick's jags to give a few of his a try. In the meantime, I'll probably just use one of the variety I have laying around.

The diameter of this rod is .187".

I should have added this to my post last night, but it was late. Here's some info that Denny sent me in an email:

I am getting $30 plus actual shipping for my rods right now. Lengths over 44" are additional. The stock that I have right now is the .156, .1875, .1925, and .2035. I can put 8-32 threads in everything but the .156, it has to have 5-40. The .187 stuff is what is hot right now. I am working on some harder stuff than what I have, but that will be later on. If you would like to order, let me know the length, diameter, and rod end you want, threads or jag).

So I've got this here .22 rimfire that I have been cleaning all wrong. Typical yay-hoo with a 3 piece brass rod from Wal*Mart so when I bought a new rifle, I decide to learn how to do it correctly.

I buy a nice rod/bore guide but then shred the nylon coating on my new Dewey rod, the same rod I use for my 22.250.

Is the diameter just too big for a .22 rimfire 'cause that sure looks like what happened, the rifling tore it to shreds.

Can I save the rod, maybe take extra fine grit sand paper and knock down the ridges or will I leave grit imbeded in the rod coating.

I think I know the answers I'm gonna get but I thought I would ask anyway.

What 22 is it? Many 22's have an ejector that is in line with the bore, and it will hit the rod. To prevent on this type gun, many use a 20cal rod, or even a 17.

Jim,
Thanks, I looked at the bore of the Savage Mark II this morning and the ejector does indeed "stick up" into where the rod would travel. A quick measurement from the end of the jag to where the gouges end on the cleaning rod confirms that the ejctor is the culprit...crap, a brand new cleaning rod shot.

I shoot the RBA benchrest game and can not say enough about the cleaning rod. I have some of the other rod made by different manufacters. I really like the rod that Denny made for me.
