New caliber for a spare action?

Well I ripped apart on of my rifles and decided I was going full custom and it’s off at the smith now. In the process over a year or changing things around and now having ripped this one apart I have everything I need for a new build minus barrel. So I was thinking maybe doing a lighter weight carry rifle for coyotes. I have a 700 short action 223 bolt face, vls stock bedded to that action, tt diamond, factory bottom metal, just need a barrel and caliber.

I currently have a
-20 tac as my main rig (the one at the smith currently)
- a 223 as a trainer which comes out when I want it to taste blood again but it’s heavy
- 6 creed for the longer pokes.

but I wouldn’t mind more of a true back up, or when I bring a new hunter, or something easier to get in and out of the truck without worrying about the high price of a custom.

I was thinking maybe a 17 cal or smaller 20. Something like a 17 rem, 17 fireball or 17-222, or 20-222? Any suggestions or thoughts. Fur friendly?

6mmx45mm would not be a bad choice. Got one in a bolt and gas gun. Soft shooter, super accurate, easy to load for and hell on smaller game under 500yds.

If you’re not going after moose or looking to shoot 600yds. or more look into the 20 Vartarg. Personally I would take it over your 17cal. choices .

Id be all over it except the feeding issues with the 20 vartarg
Stray off the beaten path, 17 Javelina or 20-222.

I don’t want to get into anything super hard to form brass so the 17 javelina would be out. But a 17-222 or 20-222 is in the runnings.

Yeah, straight 17-222 would be less painful. I’m doing a 20-222 myself. I’m really fiending for an 17 Ackley Bee.

You have the 20TAC which will be the brother to 20-222AI, purely for something different and not trimming brass 17- 222AI

The 20 caliber has intrigued me for a few years. I was considering a 20-250AI but in your case a 20/223AI would be a great alternative. There are some good bullet options

You don't need anymore toys, send the action to me as I need one! Lol. Carry on. :p :)

Paul

hahaha I love to help out anyone when I can but unfortunately in this case I just don’t believe I’ll be able to help with this request. I mean if another custom action falls across my lap I may be able to ditch this one
