New Build

I was thinking of building a new rifle for 600-1000ys f class. Which would be better a 6.5 creedmoor or a 6.5 grendel.

Of the two listed, the Creedmore.

However, not the best choice for your intended purpose.

Creedmore.

+1 on Creedmore. Grendel don't quite got the 'poop' for 1K

6.5x47L would be even better if it must be a 6.5mm...

If you are "fixed" on the smaller cartridges, especially in 6.5, I would build a 6.5 x 47... It will do anything the Creedmoor will do and you won't have to worry about primer pockets loosing up so soon. However, having said that, if I wanted 1 rifle to do BOTH 600 and 1000, I would be concentrating on what's right for 1000.. The same cartridge that will be exceptional for 1000 yards will also be exceptional at 600... However, you can have an exceptional 600 yard cartridge that is "less than exceptional" at 1000... Any of the cartridges you named, as well as the 6.5 x 47 will be GREAT at 600 but will leave a lot to be desired at 1000... I would do either a 7mm Shehane / Walker.. They are EXCEPTIONAL at 1000 and awesome at 600! Just my opinion.. Oh and by the way, I am speaking of F-Open competition... You did not state what sort of competition you are looking at.. Oh sorry>>> I did not see you were talking F-Open..

It will be a f open. I 'll be shooting mostly 600ys. 1000yds occasionally when I get time off from work.

ShootDots, he asked between Grendel and Creedmore, no way he was talking about F-T/R. ;)

I would recommend a "straight" 284.

A 6.5 is not ideal for 1K in F-Open...at least where the wind can blow. .284 WIN would be a great place to start.

+1 on the straight 284. Good barrel life, around 2000. Good brass, lapua. Excellent accuracy and good in the wind. Very wide nodes so you don't have to tune for diff conditions. Whats not to like.

+1 on the 284. I tried a creed for a season and it struggled at 1000. At 600 it was great, 800-900 decent and at 1000 not the best choice. If your a going 6.5 I would pick a 6.5x47! If you go with the creed you must reload because the factory ammo from hornady was horrible for 800-1000.

Neither,

I don't know exactly what your wanting to use the rifle for.

In the above comments, all are good choices especially the 284.

Operating cost: Consider a 6 Dasher or 6BRX

There are many choices out there for you.

JMO, and please feel free to ask any questions.

I was trying find a easy small cartridge with more accuracy than the 308. With the way components are like they are and the elections coming up. I looking for a cartridge that was easy on powder capacity. Just lower reloading cost. Reason I was thinking 6.5 credmoor that I cAn get loaded factory ammo for 20 dollars a box. Just to use it for fire forming. The way my job is time sitting at the reloading bench is a premium. It will mostly be used for mid range f class. There isnt any close 1000yds ranges nearby. I thought about the dasher but I thinking of trying something different that a lot of people are not using. I'm going to build it a savage pta so if doesn't work just change the barrel.

Well you don't have to worry about Obama getting back into office, so maybe this stupid ammo frenzy will calm down.

But if you want to compete regularly, you better have a really good stockpile of powder, primers, bullets and brass because the amount of components it takes for load testing/tuning, long range practice, then the actual rounds used during shoots is a LOT. You especially have to burn up a lot of ammo practicing hard at long range to compete with today's level of competition. I have never shot F-class, but I know that in my limited experience with long range BR, you better have a lot of time and money hidden from the wife to spend on components in order to keep pace with some of these folks ;)

I have done well with the 6.5 Creedmoor at 1000 yard Benchrest. I have shot a 7 SAUM and a 6mm Creedmoor a lot at both 600 and 1000 yards. Never could do quite as well with the 7 as the 6 at 600 yards but it sure shines at 1000.
