New build questions. .243

I'm looking at rebarreling my Rem .243.

I'm looking at a 8 twist, and hoping to shoot the 75 vmax and 105 berger hunting bullets.
I'm also thinking a length of 21 or 22 inches of barrel with a heavy profile.
I would like to be able to shoot both Pdogs, coyotes, and deer. I'm not too worried much about weight.

Has anyone had any experience with this? I did a search and didn't really come up with anything.
Has anyone had any luck with 75 vmax's in a 8 twist barrel? I do reload, so I can play with it a little bit there.

Thanks!

I like short fat barrels too, but for long range long barrels kick butt so think about how long you can put up with. I'd recommend at least 26" and 30" would be optimal. On bullets stick with heavies they won't let you down when the wind is up. 1-8 twist. Good in between load is 87 v-max not as much twist though.

Built a 243 off of a savage action with a 1:8 Shilen 26" barrel, SSS trigger. It would shoot the Nosler 70grs like a laser, and the 105 A-maxes into quarter-half moa out to 500. It preferred IMR4064 for both. It wouldn't shoot the 75gr V-max for anything, but it liked the 65s ok, I don't remember the load. Would also shoot Sierra 100gr Game-Kings like a dream, my wife dropped her first deer with one.

I've had one or more 243's for longer than I care to admit, and have rebarreled a couple in that timeframe. Here are a few of my experiences with them. For a barrel, Lilja, Shilen, or Kreiger would be my top picks (in stainless of course) in at least 26". A proven gunsmith that will stand behind his work. Pillar & bed the action, Jewell trigger, and a really good crown. :D

You'll do fine with an 8 twist, but for hunting I prefer a 10 or a 9. And if you want to pick just one bullet for all you list there, you need to look no further than the 85gr Sierra HPBT. It is the Best deer bullet I've ever used in any caliber, consistently accurate, & lethal on both Pd's and 'yotes as well. Nothing wrong with the bullets you want to shoot either.... just sayin'.... ;)

Great cartridge and very versitile. :) WD

One of the very best cartridges out there, IMO.

A 20" barrel may be a tad short for the heavier bullets to get them up to speed for long range shooting.

A compromise may be in order such as a 24" fluted meduim heavy contour 1/10 twist barrel. The 1/10 will not stabilize the 105s but do quite well with 95gr SMK. You will lose some BC points but gain some MV. Another plus is that you will have a better chance to using one powder for both 75 and 95gr bullets and have them shooting really well.

I have three .243 Wins I load for (all use different weight bullets) and unfortunately have found out that I need three powders to get the best performance out of each.

65 gr HPBT with H414
87 gr HPBT with IMR4350
107 gr SMK with IMR7828SSC
