New Build / for 50 gr V's / Prairie Dog Rig

So you want an Achley. 500 pieces of brass are MIMIMUM for prairie dogging. 500 rounds for fire forming. 100 for load/accuracy testing.
How about this route. 50gr VMAX@3200fps from my 222Rem out to 250yds. 50gr VMAX@3700fps from my 22-250 to 400yds. Still not enough? Lets try a 50gr VMAX@4000fps in a 220Swift. Winchester's very own WILDCAT. From a 6mm Lee Navy. That Swift should be good for another 100-150yds.
0000000000000rrrrrrrrrr, you could shoot 40s in a plain ole 223. They do it ALL

I have many different 20’s and it’s not easy to find 50 grain bullets unless you go to the boutique market. You already have the 223 family using them and the 53V-max covered . My opinion of the 20BR is that it’s hard on barrel life and it’s niche is the 50-55 grain bullets NOT the 32-40 grain bullet. I totally believe that the 6BR family needs to be looked at and look at the offerings from the Urban Rifleman or others be examined. It appears that Savage is appreciated and it’s not difficult to put together something using that platform shooting the 6BR of choice. It will also extend your shooting range more efficiently and more economically .

I think it depends somewhat on if you will have more than one P dog gun in the field or just one.
Most folks have several to switch out while cooling barrels.
Also depends on what range you want to shoot. 500+ yards and the bigger bullets/cal really make a differnce, esp with the ever present wind.
If I had to take just one, it would prob be a 223 AI...with 50-53gr bullets.
My all time favorite though is the 22BR with 60 vmax @ 3450fps
Hope this helps
BTW ... headed to the p dog town next week with
17 H Hornet
20 Vartarg
22BR and
6 Dasher with 87gr vmax
Yes we have the affliction.
Cheers
Where's the 204?

It’s a start from scratch. I’m pushing toward the 223 AI. And a slight hint for 6 BR with 65 Vmax or 70 BlitzKings.
He will need to make “recision.”

My vote would be a zero freebore 6 BRA shooting 55 and 70 grain Blitzkings. When I built mine, I fireformed 400 rounds in the prairie dog fields with superb accuracy. My longest confirmed kill was 655 yards with a 70 BK.

204R was developed by Hornady/Ruger from the 222 Mag case
The only thing it shares with the 222 Mag is case length.....

221 Fireball - 222 Rem - 223 Rem - 223 AI - 222 Rem Mag - 22-204 - 22-204 w/80 VLD - 22 Dasher - 22x47 Lapua

Talked with my friend this morning... He likes the RBLP ( Right Bolt Left Port) I think that is correct..
With all the wind we normally battle and above said.. He decided to go with a Savage PTA and shoot 65 Vmax or if can find 70 BlitzKings. Thanks everyone!

Looks like Savage will not be making the PTA Precision Target Actions anytime soon.
I'm suggesting he build of a Rem 700 clone.
What's a reasonable price ( in todays nutty times) action? I see NSS has Zermatt. I know nothing about these is there others?

Get a Mack Bros and build your own. I can supply all the parts and it won't cost an arm and a leg and it will be a gorgeous custom rifle that shoots like one.

@ coyote: I’m pushing him to build a 6BR shooitng 65 gr or build a 223 AI. Really have to build to what we have in inventory ( bullets powder etc)
@UR I assume Mack bros is on your website?

No Mack Bros makes actions.

My website sells everything else. :)

My dad took me on my first prairie dog shoot when I was 7, I'm now 72. I've used all the cartridges mentioned here and many others over the decades. I'm not sure you would believe how many rounds I've fired at pd's and other furry rodents. Many years I have fired over 10,000 and a slow year is 5,000+. Of my 30 some varmint rifles 6 are 204R's. Get a 204 and your other rifles won't get used very much. My humble opinion, Mark
