New build came in today

Mike Davis just finished up what is probably the last hunting rig I will ever build. My stand is about 450yds shooting distance on 3 sides but on the south east side it's about 1100yds. A river runs the full length and if you don't do a DRT shot they go to the river and gone for ever. Had several nice ones walk out past the 500yd line and I didn't have faith in my 6CM that Mike built a couple of years ago having enough left at that distance to get the job done, that's where the new 338 Lapua comes in. Kelbly Atlas, Bartlein carbon fiber, Jewel, and H&S, loading up break in loads today... John IMG_20220926_145650767.jpg

First off, nice looking setup. I'm curious, are you maybe having a little trouble keeping that scope in place? It looks as though it has possible slid around on you a bit at one time or another. If not disregard but if you are add another set of rings and that'll keep it from moving.

I've had two different rifles, a Weatherby Accumark 338-378 and a 30-338 Lap Imp, that were fairly lightish weight rifles, wore a NF NXS 5.5-22x56 scope with NF pic rail NF rings and both were a mother effr to keep the scope from moving in the rings, until, I put a second set of NF rings on one and a Near Mfg three ring Alphamount on the other.

The combination of a big boomer caliber in a relatively lightish rifle with a heavy scope sitting on top can cause issues with keeping the scope in place.

On my two it wasn't immediately noticeable but after a handful of shots fired I could see where the scope had moved. Maybe yours won't have that trouble but I would definitely keeping a watchful eye on it.

No, that old 12x42x56mm was inspected on 9-1-01, never pulled the sticker off. It's been swapped back and forth so many times from prairie dog to match rifles it doesn't know where it belongs. Panda dove tails, Bat, cheap Weavers, no telling what else. I was concerned though about what you mentioned, those rings are NF 5/8" wide and I have a brake that goes inside the suppressor. My son' has a similar rifle that I sighted in with the same setup last year and the recoil isn't as bad as a light weight 30-06 so I'm hoping it will work. But never the less, thanks for the heads up. Should know by the time I break in the barrel and build a drop chart. I'm not much on computers and I will chart it out to to 1200 in 100yd increments here on the farm. By that time I hope to know if it will stay or if I have to go to 6 screw rings... John

The heck with the New build tell us about the OLD shotgun in the background, next to the cooler.
Got it from a lady who's father had died. Haven't had time to research it yet, only markings say "CANNON BREECH" on the barrel and left side and on the pistol grip cap it says Simmons Hardware Co... and one shell came with it that I would be afraid of trying...IMG_20221004_115414586.jpgIMG_20221004_115357912.jpgIMG_20221004_115327567.jpgIMG_20221004_115257468.jpgIMG_20221004_115230752.jpg John

Big boomer = 6 screw rings. Nice rig, keep us posted on its` performance. Jeff

300gr Berger elite hunter, Lapua brass, started at 94gr. of R33. Cleaning every 2 shots, barrel slicked up at 10 rds and I stayed at 97.5 and the velocity was 2696&2711. Went to 3 shot groups and if I hold on to it good it's making a 5/8th ragged hole. But that round bottom stock was a mistake, that long ass barrel torques hard to the right and if I lose it I put one of the three right and low bout 3/4" out. Got a good can with a brake in it but it's got 27" to work on me before the bullet gets to it and you feel every bit of it, I will try to post a few groups later this week, John
