new build? 7-300 WSM or 7 SAUM?

I would like to stick with a short action but don't have to, tell me your thoughts.

Long range deer mostly with some steel thrown in at long distance, will be using a Proof barrel, likely 26", no longer for sure, not sure on action yet?

I have a 7saum built on a Bighorn Tl2 long action. 28” 8twist Kreiger Barrel. 180 ELD and 183 SMk’s. 3k pretty easy and supersonic past 2k yards here in the Rockies

The SAUM case is slightly shorter than the WSM case so may be a better option for a short action. Ballistics between the 2 are a negligible.

I’m a huge fan of the Saum. Here is a link from the forum comparing the calibers. It has some good observations. I have two light weight hunting rifles chambered in 7saum and use them for the majority of my big game hunting. Accurate and much more efficient than the WSM. The Berger 180 VLD hunting has been very impressive on several Elk and deer.

ADG is releasing SAUM brass 3rd quarter next year it seems. So take that into consideration. Norma SAUM seems readily available right now. Not sure it it's a boom/bust cycle as I've only had a SAUM for about 5 months. Anyway with a domestic producer coming online seems like SAUM might be a better choice for brass availability.

I believe Peterson might be trying to come out with WSM brass. I haven't seen anything concrete like an expected timeline for availability.

I was debating this a while back. I went with a 7 saum so I could seat rounds slightly further out when using an aics magazine.

which i don't know how much is true, but i have heard rumors that several brass manufacturers are working on tooling up for saum brass. Which will help out a lot.

Got a Long action and short, My early Nosler Brass got 3 firings before it took a crap.
I run Remington in the short and it has been stellar.
Easy mile here at 5000 ft. Love em both

The SAUM is easier to get to shoot accurately. All the 7 WSM have disappeared from 1000 yard BR. They were too overbore and wasn't accurate enough. I would do it in a long action though. Easier to get loaded rounds out and also you can throat the gun out and use the long bullets in a magazine. Matt

SAUM-is more efficient and is a little shorter case, works better in a SA over a WSM. I have one in a SA and depending on your action you should be able to load to around 2.950". Norma brass is available and hopefully a few more options to follow.
