New bbl how long ?

Well my BBL arrived today. But I thought it was going to be 28" long ,no it's 27" long . So how much does a gunsmith need to cut off for the finished project ? 220 swift ! Isn't that brass tough to get now ? Seems to me the 220 has only about a 150 FPS advantage ..

I am not sure how much you need to cut off a BRUX. When my Broughtons come they have a saw cut about an inch from the end. They need cut off back of that cut. If you went with a 22-250AI the difference shouldn't be as much. One thing to remember is the more powder and the faster you push it, the quicker the barrel goes. I thought the Swift was known for short barrel life. Matt

I don't want to burn this bbl up,I've had a 22/250 AI in the past,it's a hassle fireforming brass .That extra velocity translates into just a few less windage and elevation clicks.Not worth it. There is no "Saw cut " on this bbl. Broughtons are button rifled

It's still a pretty good guideline to go by, regardless of maker.

My 'smith buddy usually goes 1 - 1 1/2" back and spins a crown on them at that point.

It doesn't matter button or cut. They have to be lapped. What matters is if they left them long and cut them off after lapping. When they lap it gets lapped with a choke on the end. If the muzzle end is bigger they will not shoot as good. Matt

I would go with 26", you can have it shortened later if needed.

Congratulations ironworker on your new barrel. a good gunsmith will check the barrel and tell you how much he can cut off without damaging the barrel. Usually they cut off an inch or less.
You will be very happy with a 26 inch swift, lots of powders shoot well, velocity AWESOME.
I have burnt the barrels out of a few by shooting to fast or using a good cleaning practice, then sanity took over and I never had any more problems.
Do a search on barrel cleaning and find a method you like then FOLLOW it. Don't take it prairie dog hunting where the shots are fast and furious are it won't last long. But if you use it on ground hogs, crows, fox, yotes and the like you won't be firing enough to heat up the barrel hot, heat is the barrel killer!

There is a guy on this forum called Johara (spelling ?) who has a pretty good cleaning regimen he follows with good success, PM him about his technique for barrel cleaning .

Good luck you've chosen a great caliber with an undeserved reputation for barrel burning. They have Excellent accuracy and power to spare. You'll be trying hard to keep a smile off your face and aim at the same time.

Changeling I didn't go with a swift. 22/250 8" twist. I'll be bringing 3-4 rifles for my Prairie dog offensive . I use a bore guide and I use wipe out and KG1 and KG12 ,I basically manage the copper build up.

I have never found the down side to a 22/250 AI, never. I shoot AA2700, win 760, and Varget does very well but the fouling build up in the barrel is terrible.

200 fps is a lot, 3oo fps is a over the top. I shoot the 55 g Ballistic tips at 4050 out of a 26" Lilja barrel, with zero freebore. This is my 5th AI, and I am not going backwards.

60g Bergers at 3700 are wicked ugly on a coyote way out there.

Brass flow on a std 22/250 and Swift is wicked, and I wore out the barrels of many over the years on dog towns. Each rifle had a 5 gallon bucket full of ammo packed in 100 rd. freezer zip lock bags.

Oh, by the way, in all 5 of the AI's that I have owned, I never trimmed a case, and rarely had to full length size, that whole issue of the brass gripping the chamber wall really is true.

12 twists give uncanny accuracy with zero freebore and very long barrel life with ball powders, 500 yards...noth'en to it!

We fire formed our brass on p. dogs, 55's at 3850 fps, sub 1/2" groups.

KG12 works too slow for me, Montana Copper cream on their plastic brush will get the job done in 5 minutes. Montana Copper cream is similar to a solution of JB suspended in Oil...really great stuff when you don't want to screw around cleaning really dirty guns.

this is pure fun, now for me, my 22-250 was a 40x 26"13 twist hart, the weight diff for 24 vs 26 Bobby told me was no more than 3 oz. thus for the balance and velocity I took 26,

55 bks 3950 with mild h414 load shot <.200 target to prove,
pds never argued with it even out to 600 which I considered my limit.

I would not go less than 24 for this case. forget the twist.
