New Barrel

I need a new barrel for my varmint rifle. I think I want a 12" twist. What is the groups feelings on which breed. SHILEN, BARLEIN, ???? It's going to be 22-250 AI on my Rem action.

I see you live in Wyoming so your handle is relevent. The 22-250 itself is a barrel burner,a AI model could be worse ? I burned a 40x 22-250 barrel out in 3000 rounds. If you shoot dogs from a bench,i am partial to a Shilen #7 contour with a 5" tenon. You might get a setback or 2 with that tenon length. With barrel life the main question i have been using Shilen stainless standard grade barrels, not their top of the line. The accuracy is very good. I doubt if anyone could tell the difference between the two. Plus a little less expensive. Good luck with your project.

I just recently did a Krieger 12 twist 22-250 AI. Other than fire forming the brass, I have not put a lot of formed loads thru it. So far though it really likes the Berger 52 thru 64 grain varmint bullets.
Yesterday I picked up a Lilja 12 twist, that Bob Green chambered for me in a 221 Fireball. I plan on breaking it in this afternoon.
I have had several Krieger and Lilja barrels in the past and have had really good luck with them.

Here is some food for thought. Why at least not consider a 1-7.5 twist barrel to shoot 75gr A-Max bullets? You could then shoot RL-16 and you MAY (not sure) extend barrel life somewhat. Besides, for shooting out past 500 yards, the added B.C. would aide greatly in the wind. If you went this route, you would have to have a throat long enough to seat the 75s out there to get above the neck / shoulder junction.

I had one chambered this spring - Krieger 4 groove with 1/9 twist in a light barrel. I haven't shot it much more than fireforming brass. The thinking was I could run anything between the 55's to 69's. It seems to like both the light and heavier bullets.

Good luck with your build.

what twist you pick kinda relates to which bullet you really think you'll run. You're into the light bullets, I'd go 12 or 14. If you're into the medium weights, I'd go 9. If you think you'll run the heavies, I'd go 8 or 7.5. I just had a new 4 groove Krieger put on my 22-250. It's doing great. But i expect a Bartlein would be excellent as well. I've never had a.Shlien.

I would go with a 14 or a 8 twist. If you choose a faster twist you can still shoot light bullets. As far a brand hart, bartlin, krieger,
Or hart.

I have had good luck with Rock Creek barrels. Pedersen Precision made my last two barrels using Rock Creek barrels.

I second Brux, but go to Bugholes.com and see what he has. Think about the bullet , as suggested above. I agree with faster is better for more options.

I shoot a 22-250AI in a 12 twist, it wont shoot 52gr or lighter, i gotta use 60s. Next barrel Im going to a 22BR, get the same speeds and longer barrel life I think, jmo

I've got a Bartlein in 6mm and 30 caliber. I think They both have 5R rifling. They both shoot lights out. When my 223 needs a barrel, I'll most likely do a Bartlein.

Thanks for the conversation. I've been using 52gr Amax for years. When they started getting hard to find, I went to the 53gr Vmax. This is my go to rifle for varmints. Made another with a Win M70, one can cool while you use the other. Just looking for a quality barrel. View attachment 1017311
LOL, That's the way to do it !! ................. The most fun you can have with your clothes on :D

I have the same issue. I put a Shilen 12tw on my 220AI just for 53 Vmax. It shoots one hole. I have several fat barrel rifles and have had Hart, Shilen Bartlein barrels. They are all good. So much better than any factory barrel. I leave mine straight tubes for setback when the throat leaves.

you should also consider the new hart barrels with the 5 R rifling
One of them won the super shoot this year, they are really hot. same price too.
