FWIW - if it comes back looking like this, next time pay the smith a little more:

At least he turned the runnout to 12

I have to Guys I use.
#1 I buy a Krieger 32" Palma barrel $355.00 He installs for $175.00

#2 He makes the barrel as above installed for $450 ( only make Chrome Moly barrels) they are coated

Krieger Barrel, 27" SS #10 - $330
Labor to machine complete, install, test fire - $325
True and Lap Action - $110
Bed - $120
Muzzle Break, Thread Protector, and threading - $225
Oversize recoil lug - $37

What about bolt timing? Was that included in the "True and Lap Action"?

You guys should move to Australia !! We pay $700-$750 for a barrel, plus $250-$350 for a simple chambering (no trueing involved)
At AUD 1.00 = US $0.72, that's about US$680-00 to US$790-00 to supply and fit.
The next decent sized shipment of Berger 7mm bullets are expected to be around 90 c each......nearly US 65 c each.
We are still trying to understand how the gunpowders made in Australia by ADI, shipped under Dangerous Goods Compliance, and repackaged in the USA can be approx 50% dearer here in Australia. :(o_O:(

'Ard graft, mate, 'ard graft. Cradle-to-grave socialism requires a lot of tax dollars.

IMHO, and at this time, a professional gunsmith who does professional quality work, should be in the $250 range. Of course, geography and overhead are factors that have a large bearing on the actual price for his services. Yes, there are hacks that charge more and also very competent people that charge somewhat less, but I've done this long enough to know what it costs me to keep the lights on, pay for all overhead, and my time. None of us are getting rich at this work, at those rates. Much of what is paid for in good quality barrel work is the pride that a good smith has in what he does.

There are a good number of smiths out there that will simply chuck the barrel into a 3 jaw and let 'er rip, but still charge like they give a damn. Barrel chambering work isn't rocket science, but a good job does require the man doing the work to put forth the effort at doing his honest best on every single one. That's where pride in his work is a prerequisite for any good smith. We all have good days and bad days. The good smith knows when to walk away and work on something else until he knows that he is able to give each job his best effort at perfection.

Some of you may of read my thread (I want to build a rifle for me) my budget was $4000. Well guess what my new roof just cost. You know, if it not one thing blah blah. Anyway I have ( now don't fall out of your chair laughing) a Howa m1500 houge in 308. Super skinny 20" barrel. It has a got scope & mounts and works for me on deer. If you hit it on the first shot. If not hold way low & left. Walks like crazy. So, I got a online rough quote from Krieger. $1250 installed ready to shoot. S/S w/fluting, true action and supplied tuner install. That's more than double what I paid for the rifle but $3000 less than what I have. The roof to $3000 out of my $4000. Ok, you can laugh now.

You should be able to get a nice barrel on that howa for $500 done by an actual known riflesmith. Send it out later for fluting if you want.

Adam Bentley is on this forum, goes by AB_Bentley. He has done two barrels for me, both X-Caliber, both will shoot in the 1's and low 2's. He knows what he is doing period.

Just a barrel; I've paid 180ish.

Package work
Trueing (Remington), bead blast, chamber, extractor cut (Winchester),glass bedding, chamber gauge, on average $600

Figure a reamer and go gauge at $125 to &150, depending on caliber, if you want something the smith doesn't have.

One other thing- if you order a barrel direct from the mfr you can save a lot of money but you have to wait 6mo to a year. If you plan ahead its always best
