NEW BARREL COST

Can a few of you give me a idea what your gunsmiths are currently charging to put a custom barrel on a factory rifle. Without truing the action. Cost of the barrel, machining work and install.

If I buy and provide the barrel (usually around $340 regardless of the caliber-not including something like a 50 cal) my Gunsmith charges me $100 for machining and installation.

Alex

$250-$350
Maybe I should just send them to the smith that gets $100 and pocket the diff . Nope . Bet ya he doesn't pay for liability ins . At that price he's not even breaking even on tool wear and tear .

Now
Most barrels run about $330-$360.. Add to that $200 for a chamber job... If you want a Cerakote job (paint) you can add another $150-$200...
Now this I quoted above is what someone will charge from a smithing shop... If your blessed to know a machine shop and machinist with the same interest as you, you can get it a lot cheaper.. One reason, shipping charges...

True and Lap Action - $110
Bed - $120
Muzzle Break, Thread Protector, and threading - $225

You guys should move to Australia !! We pay $700-$750 for a barrel, plus $250-$350 for a simple chambering (no trueing involved)
At AUD 1.00 = US $0.72, that's about US$680-00 to US$790-00 to supply and fit.
The next decent sized shipment of Berger 7mm bullets are expected to be around 90 c each......nearly US 65 c each.
We are still trying to understand how the gunpowders made in Australia by ADI, shipped under Dangerous Goods Compliance, and repackaged in the USA can be approx 50% dearer here in Australia. :(o_O:(

FWIW - if it comes back looking like this, next time pay the smith a little more:

Isn't that for shooting around corners? Matt

Search the sites for some of the long time reputable BR gunsmiths. Somewhere in the neighborhood of $200.00 - $250.00, [plus barrel cost] add a few bucks more for a high polish or special finish on the barrel. Lace-up your PF Flyers and run away from the $350.00 + quotes.
