New Athlon Midas TAC 4x16 Scope!

Hi,
Well after looking a LOT around the Internet, watching Vids, Blogs, ect...

In my quest for a "cheap", but acceptable DMR type scope settled on this Chinese Athlon.

Seems that the Chinese have upped their Game with the latest scopes, some even comparing them to German Optics???

Yea, does not sound right, but just passing on what I have been seeing in my research.

Had a pleasant surprise when opening the box...

Noticed a lot of people complaining that the Athlon Midas Line did not come with a Sunshade or Caps to protect the Lenses...

Well, when I opened the box not only was there a Sunshade, $30 if you have to buy it, but also Butler Creek type Caps and a Nylon Throw Lever Ring.

The Throw Lever was interesting as it has a threaded Brass Insert to take the threads from the Tension Screw instead of just threads in the Nylon.

Just a first look and so far like what I see for the $350 I spent on the Scope.

I have a Steiner TOL Military Scope, will pull it out and compare the Glass later but this Midas has what they call HD Glass, and is suppose to be very good.

Wondering if anyone has tried any of these new Scopes from companies like Athlon or Arken, that is now giving companies like SWFA, Vortex, and Sightron, a little trouble!

Hi,
Here is Rex, talking about the Athlon Ares Line and these new Scopes coming out of CHINA.

This Guy has used and reviewed probably hundreds of Scopes, and seems to be a good source of info.

MOA version?

Have to wonder if the reticle all but disappears on the lower powers ??? I
Hi,
Actually not, seems the Reticle is well liked, and some even want it available on the TOL Cronus?

Admittedly, it is "Thin", but I actually like it even at 4 Power.

Might be a personal preference?

There are Chinese scopes made in factories owned by the Chinese government. And there are scopes made in China to the specs of American companies. Big, big difference.

Athlon is an American company that has scopes made to their specs in China.

Good shootin' :) -Al

I look at "Made in China" in the same way I recall "Made in Japan". If you want cheap junk from Asia, they are happy to sell you cheap junk. If you're willing to pay for better, they can to that as well.

I've gotten a couple Arken scopes lately and they look pretty good to me.

I am now onto my 3rd Athlon scope. Still own and use the first one, an Argos BTR GENII 8-34X56 which is mounted on a Savage Model 12 223. The second one was a Helos 6-24X56 again FFP which I soon found was not conducive to what I was trying to use it for. So it was traded for another Argos 10-40X56 RFP with an F-class type reticle which works much better for bench shooting.

There was a time long, long ago that Made in Japan absolutely meant junk. It also has been a long time since some of the finest, highest quality instruments have come from Japan.

What's available from China appears to be taking the same path.

Hi,
Well, when experienced People start comparing Chinese Scopes to German...

Something is going on somewhere?

I'm going to use a pair of A.R.M.S. #22 Scope Rings...

Are you Guys lapping these or just using them as is???

Seeing different opinions on this!

My perception is benchrest shooters [maybe F class shooter] by default would at least lap the rings.

For accuracy needs in the 1/2 MOA range, I would only buy quality - i.e., very well made - rings/mounts and not worry about lapping.

For example, I've used ADM and Bobro QD mounts for over 10 years. They hold within 1/4 MOA when remounting [which I do every trip to the range].

Hi,
Then I guess the Million Dollar Question is...

Are ARMS Rings, quality???

Honestly, I don't know.
My SWAG would be they would be ok for 1/2 MOA work - but I defer to others who have more experience with them or similar rings.
I would say that Vortex's precision matched rings would be good to go.

Hi,
Thanks, I'm making a Lapping Bar, and I'm going to lap them just to see how far they are off...or not!

Hi,
Here is the usual Street Price on this Scope!

Why I thought my deal was so good and everything included!

Hi,
Well, made a Lap and lapped the Rings.

Waiting on a Tension Screwdriver, so I can torque to spec and evenly on the Scope.

Should of bought one years ago!
