New action design for Benchrest. 1000 yard HG

A machinist who shoots with us built himself this rifle. He made the action from scratch. Its a straight pull rotating bolt drop port. I think it has real potential. Completely eliminates upsetting the gun due to bolt manipulation.

Heres a video, check back for a video of him shooting. He made the HG shoot off with it.

Re: New action design for Benchrest.

Well, thats pretty awesome. I like his thinking about removing the torque as you lift the bolt, and it definitely looks like it would be fast to work

Re: New action design for Benchrest.

in the video he says it weighs 50 pounds plus.

so if it works like an ar15 why not use an ar15 bolt and modified carrier? when you were talking with him was that brought up? would love to see more detailed pictures and description of the action he made.

very cool, thanks for showing

Re: New action design for Benchrest.

Butch,,,is that LEGAL ????....Im outa touch,,,I know they changed the rules to allow experimentation,,,,thanks for your input ,,,Roger

Re: New action design for Benchrest.

Yes it legal. It is 1000 yd IBS heavy gun class. He does post on here, maybe he will chime in with some details. Obviously this would need to be devoloped as this is a prototype. But I can see the potential. I have a video on his string of fire. I will get it uploaded soon.

Heavy gun is pretty much no rules. The only one is the 1/2 inch contact on front bag or rear bag if using a mechanical rest. Matt

Interesting concept/twist on allowing the majority of the bbl and action float while "pinning" the front of the bbl. Having a couple of 60# guns, I'm curious as to how much the bolt working would "upset" everything. Drop port - I definitely like.

When there and watching JT Barber run his "straight pull" action in 2 relays, I was very impressed to say the least.
That thing has Benchrest wrote all over it... and JT is a very innovative thinker !.!.!

As Alex stated above, it completely eliminates gun upset due to bolt manipulation, that would give any rifle an advantage over conventional bolt actions do to there side influenced bolt lifts and closers. More so yet to lighter weight rifles, that are more subject to being rocked and/or upset during bolt cycling.

Innovative stuff....

that's definitely out of the ordinary? well as long as theres no salvage nut on the barrel its pretty cool, not sure if I could get used to that!

Looks just like the bolt from an Automag. Straight blowback rotates bolt head allowing extraction and ejection.

As a rifle, I would imagine it functions well as the only complaint I ever got with the Automag is the force necessary to pull back the bolt.

Nice work.

Adjusting he channel that rotates the bolt head would increase or decrease the amount of force it would take to rotate and extract. I had thought of doing something similar but using ar10 parts. I have a ar15 with a side charging handle that I use like a bolt gun already.

I like this way of thinking!

sorry I missed this post earlyer but thanks for posting this Alex. Yes Im the guy that made it.
I didn't use an ar bolt because of primary extraction, no real accomidations for manualy extracting a tight case.
as Donovan saw it can be pretty quick. With some more weight in the back I hope to be able to get off ten shots in less than 25 sec. Im new at this game and I need to work on my sholder techneque.

The pictures don't reveal much detail about the chassis/barrel/action relationship. Could you please explain how it all goes together? Love the chuck, too. Do you use it like a tuner?

The chuck is the bedding block, the bbl and action free-float behind it. The muzzle brake is the recoil lug. back at the chamber area there is tension screws that push up on the bbl with X force. everything elce is mounted to the back of the chuck, scope and stock.
