New 7X57

Bought my first 7X57 in a NIB Ruger #1 RSI, it has a 20 inch bbl. I used 140 gr. Nosler partitions to great effect in both a 7-08 and a 7mm Rem Mag. Any advice on this round in such a short bbl would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks
Mark

Don't know that it really matters.......I'm not going to shoot over 150's anyway. These rifles will shoot the full patch military ammo and stabilize the bullets fine.

Ruger should cause no twist problem up to 175gr. i found loading for a friend that the Sierra 150sbt and the 160sbts shoot great out of that case, on elk i loaded for him the 150 nosler partition.
4350 was the best powder in this case in my experience.

bhead,
I had been thinking about the 150 gr. Nosler Partition for a while! Since this rifle will only be used infrequently (as in Whitetail deer season), I ordered 100 of those and I've got 200 new Rem brass I use those for a wildcat as well.....I will work up a good stout load that is as accurate as I can get it, and it won't really bother me if a nice black bear meanders along as well.......or a coyote, or anything else for that matter. :)

Mark, anywhere in the 2750-2800fps area on the 150 will give very good results. my friend took mule out to the 300yd range with no walk aways. he also took 3 elk ( 1 a 6x6) with the longest 375, in went down, started to rise then fell over.

the 7x57 is an overlooked round since the 7-08 came out and is so good in a short action. the two are very very simlar in results.
h4350 was the best in my estimation.

I have a Mark X Viscount with 20" barrel. I have used it for whitetails for over 30 years. I get my best velocity and groups using H-4350sc. or any of the 4350s work fine. I've used the 140 partition for a couple of years, probably 5 or 6 deer. My favorite whitetail bullet is the Sierra 150 SBT Gameking #1913. My rifle is long throated also so my loads exceed those listed in the manuals, but it's a deer killing machine. IMHO while giving good penetration, which is not necessary on whitetails, the partitions decrease the killing power verses a standard cup and core bullet with the proper jacket. My velocities with the 150s run right at 2700 fps with reasonably mild pressures. Over the years I've tried most of the bullets on the market from 130-160 grs. The 150 Gameking is my favorite.

In my custom 7X57 Mauser with a military barrel, I have settled on either Barnes 140 gn TTSX or Hornady A-MAX 162 gn. The 162 gn A-MAX is probably best as I load them to 2700 fps and at that speed they expand in a deadly fashion in Black tail and the ballistics beats all the lighter 7mm loads.

I also settled on RL-17 as QuickLoad indicated it as the most efficient in the 7X57. I also load them with a slightly longer COL so they just fit easily in the magazine, around 3.20".

I'm going to try RL-17 in my 7x57 as soon as I can find some. Accuracy should be as good as 4350 but with a little more velocity. Although I'm happy with the velocity that I'm getting now and I haven't been doing any deer hunting lately. My better hunting days are behind me.

Swampshooter,

You got my attention with the, "My good hunting days are behind me!"

I'm also getting on in age and I see deer hunting with my brother at his hunting club and my friend at our favorite hunting area as social events. If I get a deer, fine, but it doesn't bother me to not have to field strip it and carry it to the road!
In the event I do get one, my 7X57 is, to me, ideal as it is easy to carry, fires a low recoil load and is a killer at ranges I choose to shoot. Those ranges are 50-300yd, and my AMAX's will do the job.
