New 700 build

Just finished up my new toy thought I would share a pic. Started as a 700vls 243 it shot good but been wanting to build a stainless barrel, blued action with a walnut stock for a while now. Got the stock from forum member Jobhopper66. It was a little dented up but just what I was looking for so I refinished it and pillar bed it myself. Barrel is a shilen 8 twist in 243 action trued with mason tools and Jewell trigger. Pretty happy with it now just need to get out and shoot it.

"ducky" ,,I like those old Rem/Hart style walnut stocks,,,those were polular bak in the 70's on benchrest guns (when I got started ,,haha) they are excellent for a field varmint rifle,,,,you are doing it right,,,use H-4350 and 80 gr Berger/Watson/Fowler benchrest bullets and it will amaze you with accuracy and downrange expansion,,,,Roger

The stock is a 40x rimfire stock. Shot some 85hpbt over h4350 yesterday from 42 up to 45 in .3 grain increments. Loads at 43.5&43.8 looked pretty good. Loaded one at 46.5 looking for pressure but looked alright but my Speer manual says this would be .5 over max. Anyone running that much in a 243?

Looks good. I figured that was an old 40x stock. What did you use to finish it with? I'm putting the finishing touches on a similar project, but with a 40x action chambered in 22BR. The finish on my stock is pretty decent, but may end up clearing it with auto urethane later down the road.

It's a lacquer finish. Should have filled the pores first, it took about two spray cans to get them level. Wet sanded with 800 after to take the orange peel out.

You did a great job on that stock, far better than I could have ever done. I would say that your project was a great success judging by your pic, a rifle anyone would be proud to own.
