New 6X47 Lapua Help

Just received my new 6X47 Lapua, 28' & 8 twist, and I am looking to start my load development. I plan to start with the following powders: RL-17, H4350 and V-560 and the following bullets: Berger 105's & 108's and Sierra 107's. I have heard RL-17 is working well for 600 & 1000 yard benchrest, but I haven't seen any load details. Thanks for the help.

You might try some RL 19 in this if you have any. The mentioned powders work well, I was not really satisfied with the RL17 in my rifle though .The Berger 105 VLD shot best when slightly jammed , .015 or so )in my rifle, the 107's seem to like some jump . Most of the local shooters are using CCI 450s' with this cartridge, the 'thinking ' is that you need a hot primer due to small flash hole . Just my .02 worth >

Email Walt berger he has load data for it. In my gun I found that IMR 4350 is the ticket with the 108BT Berger. Played with RE17 and cant say that it did anything that 4350 could not. A good friend of mine, I got him a pound of RE17 and he tried it in his 6x47, and he said he was not impressed, he uses H4350, and Scott 4350, and swears by the 107 SMK.,He did shoot a 1.035 group at an IBS 600 yard match with that combo.) Some people have had good luck with 4831, 4831sc, and RE19, I cant say I have tried them. I have tried the new Hodgdon Hybrid 100v powder in it as well and was not impressed.,shot like crap, but I could get some good speed though) One last place to try for data is www.6mmhot.com

Ill give you what has been working in my 6x47L at 1000 yards.
Work up to these loads as I do run my rifle right on the ragged edge. I have tried to slow things down but it always seems to loosen up my groups so I end up right back where I was, HOT!.

My barrels are also 1-8 twist and 28'

41g RL17 Berger 105's 3250,won a few relays with this load)
41g H4350 Berger 105's 3150,works well in many 6x47L's)
38.5g RL15 Berger 105's 3200,New barrel really likes this one)
41g N560 Berger 105's 2950 ,.2 5 shot group at 100yard but felt it was a little slow so I never shot in comp.)

These are all my MAX loads and are pushing it for sure. But all of the above show good results out to 1000 except the N560. Some day I will try it in a match.

41 grains in the 6x47L is just about a full case.

Tried a few B108's but couldn't get them to shoot as nice as the 105VLD's

Just got a few 105 JLK's and am working up loads as I write this.

Hope this helps

I wish i had a dollar for every time i read someone wasnt happy with RE17. I am the same way. I thought the stuff sucked!!!! I will never try it in anything ever again. There are to many good powders out there to mess with getting another 50fps. H4350, varget V133, RE15. Dont wast your time with RE17!! Now Keep in mind this is my opinion and maybe mine only. Take it for what its worth!! Lee

Your view of RL17 isn't shared by everyone. While I will admit it didn't produce the smallest groups at 100 and 300 yards. The extra speed helps at 1000. No 1 powder works best for every one or every gun or in every situation. Dont not try RL17 just because some cant find a use for it. It does do what it claims. Very well I might add.

You stated that RE17 doesnt give you the best groups at 100 or 200 but the extra speed helps at 1000. I guess i dont understand that very well. If it isnt accurate then how does the extra speed help at 1000 yards??? Humm!!

Maybe he's willing to sacrifice a little accuracy for less wind deflection. There are times when just keeping your shots on paper can win you a trophy.

I have a 6x47 that loves RL 17. It shoots 107 SMK. and 115 Berger's into 27/8' groups at 500 Meters, with 38.5 gr RL 17, cci 450 primers and seated touching the lands. I tried 4350 but the groups weren't as good. The 107's can be pushed to 3280 fps and the 115 are at 3017 fps. Tom.

I'm not surprised that you dont understand. Anyone that wouldn't use a particular powder just because they couldn't make it work in 1 rifle and now refuses to try it in any other rifle and then tells everyone else not to use it in anything probably should be looking for a new hobby.

And yes what Ray said is correct. It has as a matter of fact won me a few trophies.
