New 6BR / Updated with report

I want to say thank you to all that helped me pick components for this build. Great site.
Today was finally new rifle day for my 6BR. It was purpose built as a midrange target rifle. Donor rifle was a .308 SPS Tac. Ordered the reamer and go/nogo gages from PTG in February. Got on the list with Beanland in April and got all the parts to him 1st of June. First impressions are that I think I'm going to like the XLR stock and the trigger timing is exceptional. The LR Accuracy bipod is sweet. Specs as follows.

All work done by Jon Beanland
Rem 700 action trued / PTG lug pinned
Bushed for small firing pin
Timed Jewell HVR Trigger/ tuned cocking piece
XLR Chassis / Rear tang bedded
Long Range Accuracy Bipod
6mm 10 twist Krieger barrel finished at 24"
Chambered in 6mm BR Norma (.2704 neck/.089 freebore)
Kampfeld Sideport Brake
Cerakote finish Patriot Brown/Black
Tab Gear sling
Zee Rings
Nightforce

Load development to follow this coming weekend. Will be trying Berger 90 grain BT, 90 grain Lapua Scenar, and 95 FB BIBs.

Still need to move the front sling mount and put the offset inserts in the Zee rings for a little more clearance. Any other suggestions?

Re: New 6BR / Thanks for your help

Im typically not into rifles like that but that one is awesome. Let us know how it shoots.

Re: New 6BR / Thanks for your help

I like it very much. The woodchucks in my neck of the woods would tremble.

Please keep us posted thru load development. Pictures would be great.

Did David Kiff at PTG suggest that freebore for those bullets. Not that I am questioning anything regarding your build, I am just trying to learn about freebore for the 6mmBR.

Thanks. I'll try to post more pictures this weekend during load development. Will be trying the Berger 90 BT and 90 Lapua Scenar for this test.

The freebore was recommended by Dave for the Berger 90 BT. I think the Scenars will be fine and I'm not sure on the BIBs yet. They may or may not get used depending on how the others do. Also it looks like they should have more freebore to seat properly.

What bipod is that? Looks really stable. I'm looking for one for the 30 Major AR that Mike is building for me.

Long range Accuracy. Expensive booger, but is really nice and stable. I got it from XLR with the chassis.

Re: New 6BR / Thanks for your help

Many thanks for getting back to me on my freebore question, you are being a major help to me. Please keep us posted how load development works out. I would really like to know what bullets that freebore likes.

Congratulations again!

Re: New 6BR / Thanks for your help

Got out today to do some testing. I shot 25 rounds of Berger 90 BT and 25 of the 90 Scenars. All with CCI450s and Varget. These were 4 shot groups and there was one oddball just checking pressure. The Bergers did best by a little bit but I did shoot them first and may have been getting tired. Also somehow got out of sink with the scenar target. The last two groups with the scenars opened up to around a half inch or so and was the worst of the bunch. Will keep testing but am happy at this point and looks promising.

Suggest that you "round robin" among your loads to avoid fatigue, wind changes, etc biasing your results.

Thanks and I do agree. Probably had more going on than I should have doing tests with two different bullets at once. I think the Scenars will shoot about the same as the Bergers at these weights, and did all but the last two and I'm not giving up on them by a long shot. Also there were no signs of pressure so it looks like I can go up some more in further testing.

One interesting thing with my particular lots of bullets though. The Scenars were actually larger in diameter than the Bergers. Just very minute but showed a difference of 10 indicator reading on my K&M arbor press and was very consistent between all loaded.

Higher seating pressure doesn't necessarily mean a larger bullet. It could have a longer bearing surface.

Just by the looks of your rig, and the bipod, I think I know what your use will be, maybe wrong, but???

Try the 95gr vld, higher bc , I never could get the 88gr flat base to shoot out of my gun, but the vld, shoots from 100-1100 like a champ, barring wind of course.

It's just a fun gun right now. If I get a chance to do any varmint hunting later I would like to use it for that though.

The 95 VLDs might not stabilize in your 10 twist. Berger says that they need 1:9.

The 87 VLD Hunting works well as do the 90 BT Target and Randy's 95 FB.
