New 6BR owner

Took me almost a year to finish my rifle between waiting on the smith to blueprint my action and of course waiting for my barrel. Just shot it today for the first time, lovin it. The jury is still out on the 105gr Berger VLD but i got lucky with some 90gr sierra game changers I loaded up for barrel break in and printed a couple of really nice .230 groups at 100. Not to bad for a half arsed Howa 1500 with a Shlien "alternut" poor mans target rifle.

Just need to find some more projectiles to play with as everything I have other than the Bergers and 90gr game changers is mighty light for a 1-8 twist.

First post btw but I spent untold hours reading on this board trying to learn as daddy always said, when you want to learn something eyes, ears open mouth shut.

Hey! Welcome to the forum! You might have to wait for the panic/shortage to end or pay thru the nose for those Berger 105s. I’m shooting 85 Sierras in three of my guns. I’ll be shooting them at 100 to 300 anyway so I don’t really need a long range bullet.
What powder are you using?
Some guys have reported good results with the Sierra 107s.
I used to shoot a lot of Hornady 105s with good results.

Just got back my from my buddies property where I can get out to 500m. The 105 VLD's are coming along. Moved down to .020 off jam and hit a good long node from 29.8 to 30.1 of varget. I think I see now those VLD's come alive 300 and out. Got a little bit lucky on the way back when I stopped off at a local shop and picked up some of my not so favorite nosler custom comp 105's but the price was right (for these days) at 73.00 bucks for a 250 box.

Sorry for rambling guys, you know how it is. When you have a good day at the range the clouds go away and the sun comes out. Now that I have the twice fired brass I will be sending my FL sizer out to Foster

Don't get hung up on bullets. You have a bullet that will shoot back to back .230s on back to back days, ride it. I was once advised to leave a 500 yd MATCH shooting a 6PPC with 68 he bullets. Well, I won and have won quite a few more with that combination. I saw a new shooter at the VBR shooter Ridgeway PA consistently shoot above the middle of the pack with 95 gr SMKs. If it works it works. If your going to shoot a lot remember your barrel is a consumable just like a box of bullets. Shoot an extra 200 rounds in load development to find a 105 class bullet that shoots as good or maybe a tenth better, is it worth it? That is 10 percent of your barrels life that will never make a difference in matches to 500 yds.Lot's of good info on here, but not near as much as misguided theroy. Have fun, sounds like your off to a good start.

Thank you Ccrider, since you posted that I checked my unsized brass by pulling the ejector and firing pin assembly. By bolt still closes with only a tiny bit of resistance so I will follow that advice and see what I have after a third firing with a 105gr and check it again.

You are welcome. I would fire this last load with a full load.

Welp, I reckon I need to enjoy my plate of crow now after I beat up the noslers a bit. Loaded up some of the custom comp 105's .020 off jam. It was breezy today so I went to the indoor 100 yard range. Hit a nice deep node at 29.5, 29.7 and 29.9 with a .318, .323 and a .280 respectively. Going to play with seating depth as that aint to awful for a garage goober.

Going to try out some Shooters World Precision as well. My .308 likes it better than Varget although I do give up some velocity.

Might want to try the108 Target from Berger if you get a chance. My 8 twist loves them.

I was a die hard 105 fan until a buddy turned me onto lighter bullets ( I only shoot 300-500 yards) . Just bought 3000 of them . I’m hooked !

I’m a Berger 108 fan for LR stuff in my Dasher, but recently got some 90 Berger’s and Lapua Scenar-L’s. Worked up a nice Varget load for 300 Yd FClass using those bullets. Shoots in the .2’s with an SD of <5 at 100 yards. Wondering how those Hornady 87 grainers would work, price is 1/2 or less then those 90’s, if I could ever find them to try them out.
